NEF: My hair is driving me crazy!

I am in the process of growing my hair out and its the longest it has been in years and sadly its just below my chin.  But I've got mad waves in my hair...not the pretty kind...the big ugly wild waves.  So if I want it too be even remotely straight and controlled, it means spending lots of time with a flat iron (and I've got thick hair too) so its time consuming.  I think it will be easier to handle once it gets longer (like shoulder length) but right now I'm ready to pull it out!  Any suggestions to get me through this yucky stage?

Re: NEF: My hair is driving me crazy!

  • I have no advice, since my hair is the exact opposite (pin straight and super fine), but I'm hating on my hair lately, too.  I usually keep it pretty short, and got it cut a week and a half ago.  Now I wish I hadn't cut it.  I think pregnancy has changed it's texture, because I CANNOT manage to style it without spending forever and using tons of product.  My hair has always been pretty easy to deal with, and rarely needed product to keep it from sticking up.  Now it just sticks out all over the place.  Plus, I'm having to wash it daily where as I use to go 2 days between washings to avoid drying it out and causing fly aways.

I hate walking past a mirror.

  • bobby pins, perhaps?  Just to get it out of your face?

  • Why are you growing it?  My gut reaction is that if you're miserable, cut it and go with a style you love.

If you need it longer for something, though, have you tried headbands--the long cloth kind are easy to make, don't put pressure on your head, and help hide the obnoxious bits that don't do what you want.

Are you using a heat control spray before the flat iron?  That can really cut down on the amount of time it takes you, and protect your hair at the same time.  What sort of flat iron are you using?  Something with bristles or a little comb can increase the frizzies.  If it's a variable temp, try going a bit hotter or cooler than you usually do to see if you can get more control more quickly.

Also try looking at websites for magazines to see if you can get ideas from pictures.

    GL!

  • I'm growing it out just because I wanted to try out longer hair!  This time last year it was a really short pixie cut but I just want something different.  Whenever I attempt to grow it out, I always get to this stage and get frustrated and hack it off so I'm really trying to work through it!

So for now I just keep the top back with bobby pins.  I am using a heat control spray to help when I use my flat iron and I don't use one with bristles.  Its ceramic (I am not sure of what brand).
