Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What have you learned by watching other moms?

The tip about the pizza cutter reminded me that I've learned a lot of things just by watching other moms with their little ones. ?I can't say I've learned anything really life-altering but I've definitely learned a few shortcuts. ?

Let's share what we've learned and I'll bet we all learn a new tip or two!

- pizza cutter to cut food. Fast and easy to clean

- socks on before the pants - a silly thing but so much easier to not deal with the pantlegs especially if you have a squirmy baby?

?- put the change of clothes in your diaper bag inside a ziploc. ?You can kind of roll up the ziploc to squeeze out most of the air making a much smaller package. ?And then you have the bag available if you need it for soiled clothes. ?

  • When DS was only 6 months old, we were in Target.  I watched a mom with her older toddler tell the little girl that she couldn't have her toy back because she had thrown it.  The girl just accepted it--didn't complain or anything.

Since then, I've wanted to be like her.  Not sure that I learned anything that I didn't already know from teaching--follow through with your threats, and follow your own rules.  It was just nice to see the girl be completely ok with the "No, you can't have it back because you threw it" statement.

  • We love to freeze yogurt sticks and give them to DD frozen. ?She loves them just as much as ice cream, and they are a healthy snack.

  • Remember to use big words around your child. I was visiting my college roommate and we were with her 4-year old daughter. We walked outside and my friend said, "wow it's gloomy." When the daughter asked what gloomy meant, she replied "it means ominous." Yes, she used ominous to define gloomy. The kid knew what ominous meant. And when that child started first grade, she was reading at a fourth grade level.

When your child acts up, follow through on threats. I've seen so many people threaten and threaten and then not follow through. These kids are obnoxious because there's never any consequences.

    ?

They are in the same section with the yogurt. ?They are yogurt that is just in a stick form, in the exact shape of a ruler. ?You just cut the top off, and kids suck the yogurt out of the stick, instead of eating it with a spoon. ??

  • definitely follow through, no empty threats! DH and I are determined to do this one as best we can. We have seen too many parents in our families threaten and threaten with things they will never follow up with and the kids know it!

what to keep in my diaper bag: change of clothes, disposable placemats, disposable changing pads, plastic baggie for yucky diapers or soiled clothes, teething strips, etc

hmm, I know there are many more tips, but I cant think of them now!?
