I decided to get the Medela double electric pump for after the baby is born. They do have one that clips to the bra for a "hands free" version. If I had an office or closed space where I could keep working and pump I would have gone with that. The picutre made it look like a torture device but it seems useful.
Oh, and make sure you take a look at Ameda's double electric pump. It's very similar to the one Madela makes, but it's a closed system, which means it's impossible for milk to back up into the electronic components and ruin it. When I got mine the lady at the store told me that is the major complaint they get about the Madela.
Don't argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level then beat you with experience. - Mrs. G
Medela PISA. You definitely want a good electric double pump. Ditto checking with your insurance re any possible coverage. Also, order on-line. I got mine from Hackley Healthcare (I think that was the name) and they had some of the cheapest prices around.
I worked for a short time after having DD. Then my DH got sick with extended hospital stays that I had to pump so DD could get milk with grandma and grandpa at home. Shortly after my DH's recovery I became a SAHM, but I continued to use the pump so I could leave DD with DH and to just give me a break from time to time. I used an Ameda pump and it worked really well for me. I never had supply issues and it seemed to do the job and empty my breasts. It still is in great shape and I will use it again with this baby, so DH can have daddy bonding time and give an occasional bottle.
Warning: There is a slight beeping sound the motor makes. I have heard some people hate that, but it didn't bother me.
Definitely an electric double pump. There are several options (see BFing page in my bio).
And ditto pp to check with your insurance. Mine is awesome and pays 100% of whatever I want - but I have to buy before the baby is born. Some plans only cover certain types, so check now.
If I had to pay myself, I would have bought the Ameda Purely Yours (which is supposedly the same as the L... (sp?) one sold at BRU). Instead, I got the Medela Freestyle, which is really expensive. I liked it because it's really small and compact, which is all the better for lugging around to daycare, work, gym, daycare, home everyday. It also has a hands-free option, which I've heard is handy so that you can read, check email, etc.

I bought the Madela PIS, which I plan to use at work and I also plan on renting a hospital grade pump, to keep at home. It's a bit of overkill, but I really, really want DS to get exclusively BM and if I don't have to lug a pump back and forth to work, it'll be much easier on me and I'll be more likely to stick with it. Also, I've heard from more than one LC that the hospital grade pumps are the best at keeping up your supply if you're going to pump.
I used the Ameda Purely Yours for DD and it was perfect. I borrowed it from a friend who used it with her son. I just bought the new hoses and shields for myself. Because of the closed system a PP used, there is no danger of backup or cross contaimination. I pumped for a year while working full time.
I have heard good things about the Medela but may not be worthe the money since they are almost double the price of the Ameda.
I am planning on using the same Ameda for Baby #2.
