DS not gaining weight/ cluster feeding

My DS  was born at 9lbs. 8 oz. and lost the standard amount of weight in the hospital. At his 2 week appt. he only gained 4 oz.

He feeds 14 times in 24 hours. for about 40 minutes at each feed and sometimes i need to top him off with some formula! I do pump some BM so DH can give a bottle and give me and my body a break, but I pump during the missed feed to keep up my supply.

We have a Dr. appt. on Friday to see if he has gained anything.

Just wanted to see if anyone experienced the same thing

Re: DS not gaining weight/ cluster feeding

  • My DS only lost a few ounces after birth at 6 lb 12 oz. then he gained a little over one lb by 6 weeks. We EBF, so the LCs tell me this is normal. Our 6 week appt is tomorrow so we will see what the pedi has to say...

  • My ds didn't get back to his birth weight (a loss of 9 oz) for 3.5 weeks.  When we went to the LC, we found it was because he wasn't getting enough food from me to gain it back.  This was partially due to his lazy sucking, but my supply was also low.  Is your ds getting enough BM at each feeding?  That would be the only suggestion I can give you, but it's just a suggestion.

  • I would visit a LC and feed him and then weigh him to see how much he is getting at a feeding.

  • My son is similar to the OP.  He was 9 lb 7 oz at birth, and was still short of his birth weight at his 2 week appointment.  Despite his sizeable birth weight, he's gaining weight slowly and now he is consistently around the 25th percentile for weight.

While I was on leave, I fed him on demand, sometimes for 45+ minutes.  I know he was eating because of his loud, slurpy swallowing and the fact that his face would be covered in milk after he pulled away.  Even now, he gets 18 oz at daycare and I nurse on demand at home.  So unless my BM is unsatisfactory, he's getting plenty of calories.

DH, the pediatrician, and I assume that he has a fast metabolism, like his parents.  We're both tall and thin, and we both were skinny, hyperactive kids.  It worries me sometimes, but the pediatrician is OK with his progress since he's hitting all of his developmental benchmarks.

  • Thanks all for your help. I called my LC and she mentioned trying to switch feed to make sure he is actively feeding. I know he is getting milk b/c his mouth is full when he pulls off and when I pump I am getting 4 oz. at a pop... we will see how our Dr. appt goes on friday. He also cluster feeds, like every hour on the hour for three hours straight. THis is whn DH steps in and feed EBM so I can get some rest..

Her'es to a little weight gain!
