1st Trimester

Losing Weight - Need Help!

Since I became pregnant I have lost 5 pounds (starting 136 now 131 pounds). I find it very hard to eat any food and when I do eat I eat about two mouthfuls. I have been able to force myself to eat more but feel terribly sick for the next couple of hours. This cycle could leave me messed up for the whole day.

I have never thrown up in my life (true sentence), so I think my body is naturally reacting by not letting me eat food. The smells of most foods make me feel sick and even when it smells good once I put it my mouth, I can only stomach two bits.

To top it off, some of my favorite foods of all time, taste absolutely disgusting - like asparagus, seaweed salad, and sweet potatoes. The joy of food is gone. The lack of food has also made me unable to exercise because basic moves make me tired.

Is anyone experiencing this crazy of weight loss - if so any advice? and should I be worried.

Re: Losing Weight - Need Help!

  • Have you asked your doctor?  If you're not throwing up and what you do eat is healthy (along with your prenatals) then you're probably fine.  If any eating makes you feel sick, but you don't throw up then why don't you just eat more?  You'll still feel sick, just like before, but you'll be getting more of the nutrition you need.  I hope that it all works out for you and you and your baby are as healthy as can be!

  • I would definitely ask your doctor - there are meds they can prescribe for nausea, I think...(I know for sure they have them for excessive vomiting)

Also, I agree with the PP that you might want to just force yourself to eat more. is it possible that you're so hungry that you just feel sick instead of hungry, and that you'd feel better if you just forced yourself to eat a whole meal (and by whole meal I mean about 3-400 calories, b/c I know since I started experiencing m/s I can only eat small meals, even now that I am not feeling nauseated all the time.

I hope you get some answers, this m/s thing can be so frustrating and feels like it will never end, but it will be worth it soon!

  • If you're losing that much weight, you need to talk to a Dr.
  • I lost four pounds for the same reasons you listed above...but I was thorwing up too.  My doctor gave me some meds that helped.  I'm still not 100% but I'm not tossing my cookies anymore.  I would talk to your doctor.
  • You should be getting close to your first visit.. so ask your doctor.

i read that the first trimester being so sick and loosing weight is not harming the baby b/c he/she needs very little nutrients. it's the second trimester that you need to start adding the pounds.

I'm sure you're fine. there are women that have lost a ton of weight in their first trimester due to ms...

try to take it easy and maybe try to eat some crackers

    Good luck

  • Def talk to your doctor....but losing weight is normal for some people.  However, I would force yourself to eat.  I feel sick pretty much the entire day and eating is the only thing that helps.  Something about the acid in your stomach.  At least force down crackers.
  • Now, see, I didn't have ANY morning sickness what so ever & I still lost weight. Your body is creating another life all on it's own but thankfully everywhere I've read, the baby doesn't need very much nutrients right now. Just be sure you're taking your vitamins! I weighed 124 pre pregnancy & went down to 116 & my Dr. said it wasn't a problem at all. You will gain a lot of in the 2nd & 3rd trimester, so don't despair! If you are THAT worried about, I'd ask your Dr. for some extra reassurance.

I also had food aversions in my 1st tri as well. Instead of cravings, I just couldn't stand some foods.

  • I had a hard time eating so I sipped on liquids, like smoothies, Gatorade, and ginger ale mixed with cranberry juice. Hope that helps. Oh, peppermints are wonderful to help ease the sick feeling.

  • Try drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast shakes...at least you are getting some nutrients in you but you don't have to eat per say.
  • It's totally scary! I'm down 15 pounds since my first doctor's appointment at 5 weeks, thanks to vomiting and hating all things food-related. I called in a panic (to my dr. and my father-in-law who is an OB/GYN) and they both told me to just calm down, take it easy and try to eat what I can. They put me on Fenegan (sp?) to help with the m/s, and that has made it possible to keep down some food (mostly carbs at this point). But they both assured me that the baby is fine and soon I'll be gaining wait like crazy. It's more important right now to stay hydrated.

But you should totally check in with your doctor any time you are worried. That's why they are there.

  • Thanks for all the encouraging notes and to know that some of you are going through similar circumstances. I am down 7 pounds now. I went to my first midwife visit and they said this is normal but that I should work on trying to eat more in the next two weeks. I am going into the office in 2 weeks to get reweighed - they dont want my weight to go down. Food is not as disgusting as it was one week ago - which is nice. Now it is going to take diligence and concentration - which is crazy because I normally love food. :(
  • With my first pg, I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks.  I was so sick...I couldn't even drink anything.  My doctor told me that they've actually done studies on women that prove losing weight is not a big deal in the first trimester.  As unpleasant as it is, he said it is OK.  That being said, if you are miserable, ask your doctor for some medication.  Hope you feel better!

  • With both of my pregnacy I am the same excact way, I dont really want to eat I am not sick or anything I just dont have a taste for anything unless it is something I really want, and I am running out of things I like. I did lose 15 pounds already, and I do exercise and i am healthy, so it just depends on your body. I have given up sweets so that has contributed to me losing most of my weight. But if you lose more than 15 or 20 you may want to go see your doctor, I did gain most of the weight back in my second trimester.

    Hope this helps

  • I lost 15 pounds so far, mainly from lack of appetite and just the fact that even the smell of most foods made me nauseated.  My Dr. gave me a prescription for Zofran 8mg tabs, to take every 6-8 hours as needed, and it worked for the nausea but didn't increase my appetite.

Eating small meals (even just a few bites at a time) might help, saltines and triscuits, and soup helped me.

I'm finally nearing the end of this trimester and I'm starting to feel a tiny bit more normal.  I occasionally get an appetite now and then, even just for a few minutes before I completely lose my taste for anything.  Sometimes you just have to force a few bites, even if it feels like the last thing you want to do.

    It does get better!

  • The best advice I can give you is to eat very plain foods (toast with a tiny dab of butter or jam (or without), or plain whole grain pasta, etc) in VERY small amounts throughout the day.  Two bites here, two bites there.  If nothing else, eat whole grain or saltine crackers.  You should have something in your stomach or else you'll feel even more nauseous.

I too had very bad MS, so bad that I couldn't even open the fridge without the smell making me gag or hurl.  My dr. gave me anti-nausea medication ZOFRAN (also given to chemotherapy patients... pretty strong stuff).  It made me very drowsy, but at least I could eat a little more.

It is normal to lose some weight during the 1st tri.  Your body is adjusting!

If anything, make sure you are getting enough fluids, even if it means drinking carbonated/flavored water, hot decaf tea or ice-cold gatorade or apple juice (OJ is too acidic for sensitive tummies), and taking prenatal vitamins.

    Talk to your doctor, too.
  • The doctor told one of my good friends to drink milkshakes...she thought it was a great idea too and it worked lol
  • I lost 10 lbs in my first trimester. My doctor said its?fairly?common for some woman to lose?weight?due to changes in diet and hormone changes. As long as you don't lose a?significant?amount your fine and you gain it back in the second you shouldn't need to worry but at your next appt. bring it up with your doctor.
