I really hate misspellings but I am trying to compromise with DH. I love the name Graham, I know graham cracker....and he wants a Scottish name (his last suggestiong was Alastair)...this is the Scottish variation. We aren't even expecting yet but hopefully this IVF will do it and I'd like to settle this before I continue to overanalyze every name a thousand times.

Re: Graeme?
One of our groomsmen is from a very Scottish family and his youngest brother is Graeme.
It is constantly, always, and forever misspelled and mispronounced. Which, in addition to their very Scottish last name which is always mispronounced, has made life difficult. He was teased that he had a girl's name (Emme and Grammy) in middle school, which he hated.

Graeme is brutal, really. Upon first glance it looks like grayme (rhymes with name).
FWIW, I really like Graham.
No, I don't like this spelling. I reallllllly like Graham though. Can you do a Scottish mn then? I wouldn't worry about "Graham cracker." Honestly, you can make something silly out of EVERY name if you want, so don't overanalyze. GL!
Btw, GL with IVF. TTTC is actually just about my fav board here. I went to lurk when my BF started discovering IF, so I wanted to learn about diagnosis, treatment, and how to support her. Well, I got involved in everyone's stories! Now I go there and to SAIF to check in on people and read blogs. I hope you can move to SAIF soon!
Wow, I am really surprised by all the negative reactions to the name on here. I know several Grahams and Graemes, and other than the "graham cracker" thing, I am pretty sure that most of them don't give their names much thought. I mean really, on the scale of insults, "graham cracker" rates pretty low! Plus, it's an important part of a yummy s'more.
Of the people I know, Graham is definitely the more common spelling, but Graeme is a quite well accepted, more Gaelic variant. I actually prefer it, especially if you might have other children and be thinking about giving them Irish or Scottish-origin names.
I don't like this spelling. I pronounce that with an Scottish accent and a little roll of the tongue. I like it for a Scottish person.
FWIW, if this had been a boy, his name would have been Graham Douglas. I LOVE the name Graham. Go with that and honor DH heritage in the middle name. Oh and our last name is actually similar to cracker (think skipper, without the S). I still would have used Graham.
I like Graham.
Gram is what I call my grandmother.
Also, I can't believe how much everyone has bashed Graeme! In Australia, this name (and spelling) is pretty popular! I like it too.
Your friend is lucky to have such a great friend!

Love.
Graeme Green is one of my favorite authors.
and remember that great book Animalia? That was written by Graeme Base.
Awesomeness.
Go for it.
And to the person who said "your baby's going to be born in the US, right?" Yes, our children will be American by birth (most of them, anyway) but with technology they will be citizens of the world. Using what the average American can pronounce as your yardstick is selling the potential of your child very, very short.
This is so, so true. Over and over on here people think no one would be able to pronounce names that aren't Amy or John. So what if he has to spell his name? My name is Andrea and I CONSTANTLY have to spell it and correct how people say it.
I like Graeme. If it is a good compromise go for it.
I absolutely love Graeme. Totally don't like Graham though. Weird.
??
Very well said. I was going to respond in a much more terse way to the ignorant PP -- but you have much more tact than I. Thank you.
I am pretty positive we will name a boy one of the two variations of the name. I just felt I would dodge the cracker comment ahead of time since I get it almost every time I post about the name.

I feel the same way!
Well, don't let it deter you from using it. ?I would consider it a non-issue. ?As far as Graeme, I had to google the pronunciation. ?My maiden name is Polish... it really got old having to constantly pronounce and spell it. ?I would stick with the traditional spelling and use a Scottish middle name.

The name Graham is on this Scottish name list for boys. Spelt Graham. Show DH?
This. Please, take it from someone who's name has always been misspelled... don't use Graeme! If you don't like Graham, go with a different name altogether.
