IUI vs. TI (pros & cons)

I was wondering if there are pros/cons to an IUI vs TI. This will be my second cycle on clomid + ovidrel. The first cycle we did TI. This cycle they are giving us the option of the IUI if we want. The issue is not me getting pregnant but staying pregnant. I have had 3 m/cs since July 2008.

I am just wondering about the logistics of and IUI as well. I am starting clomid tonight and I go next Wed for my u/s and bw. Next Saturday I am throwing a suprise party for MH so I am wondering if I have an IUI that day or the day before if it be too stressful with throwing a party as well. I never had an IUI so I don't know what to expect.

Can someone fill me in?

Thanks!

Re: IUI vs. TI (pros & cons)

  • We choose TI b/c our insurance didn't cover IUI and I had success w/TI before.  Also my DH is the lets put it nicely "shy" type of fellow with whom romance w/a cup would have been really difficult for him.    That was our reasoning for TI.

What I didn't like was my uncertainty when or if I o'd.  I also hear if your DH has a low sperm count IUI is a very very very good thing b/c the little guys get a first class trip down the uterine canal.  Many have done IUI here and have had success.  I'm sure they can give you a better fill in than I could what it is all about.

  • just like the pp, we too chose ti over iui due to our insurance coverage.  we are lucky in that my husband has no issues whatsoever...it's all me baby...so we figured we'd try that route a couple of times once they figured out what they had to do with me before pursuing iui out of pocket.

unfortunately b/c we didn't do iui, i have nothing else to give you as far as advice on whether or not you should do it before/after the surprise party...i'm sure others will chime in though that have had experience!

    good luck to you!!

  • We did IUI (#4 was the winner) and here is how I explianed it to my very non-medically-but-sports-savvy DH:  It's like giving the little guys a 10 yard head start in the 100 yard dash.  It doesn't mean that they are going to "win" but it gives them a better chance.  (BTW, he had no problems with a SA, but my RE still recommended it.)

We collected at home - and then my DH had to drop off the "sample" by 8 am.  My IUI was usually around 10 am and took about 10-15 minutes.  Honestly, it was no big deal - kind of like a PAP, not fun, but not bad either.  Some ladies say it wasn't even as bad as a PAP for them.  You then had to lie there for about 5 minutes after it was done.

My RE put no restrictions on activity after the IUI and encouraged us to have sex that night and the following night.  (We didn't the night before my DH had to give a sample.)

     HTH and GL!

  • We used IUI, but our insurance covered it. I also had a back to back IUI (one 24 hours post trigger, and one 24 hours after the first) because the insurance covered it! The RE said that with an IUI, you increase your chances slightly, but since we were using injectables, it was a good idea to get every last percent of a chance for sucess.

DH would go in, produce a sample, and  I would come in about 1-2 hours later for the IUI. It was as invasive as a pap, and not painful at all.

Unless you have cervical fluid issues, it can be a toss-up as to have an IUI or not. If your insurance covers it, I would go for it. Also, it is not stressful. You return to normal activities after just as if you had had sex.

    Good luck with your decision.

  • I would personally go with TI. We conceived DS with just Clomid and TI. Then had a miscarriage this past year conceiving on my own. I did an IUI/injectables cycle, and it was a BFN. DH has no issues, it is just my ovulation and hormone disorder (don't O until about day 40 and have low progesterone and short LP). I found the IUI to be completely stressful and didn't think it gave me the best shot. With TI, if there are no MF issues, you can BD as much as you want. We were told not to BD on the night of the trigger or after the first IUI (did B2B) because they wanted a decent collection on the day of IUI, so basically we had the 2 IUIs and could then BD as much as we wanted but I really thought it would have been helpful if we could have done it before hand.

FWIW, I got a second opinion and my new RE said I could go back to Clomid and TI for a few cycles and I am absolutely RELIEVED. good luck!

Your chances are higher with IUI. In my opinion, if you are going through treatments, you mine as well do the option that gives you the best chances.....the IUI.

We paid out of pocket for everything, but to me, TI was just doing what we had already been doing for over a year!

    GL!
