I am breastfeeding, and I also pump and give DD a bottle. About 75% of bottle feeding our LO starts to choke and the area around her mouth turns blue. I have to turn her over and pound on her back until I hear her squeaking for air. It is EXTREMELY scary. I mentioned it to the Dr today and she said maybe its the type of bottle I am using (Avent - but with the littlest nipple). Anyone else experience this? She doesnt choke while taking the breast, but the whole point of the bottle is so that we can leave her with other people. I cant leave her with anyone for fear she will choke. Anyone have any suggestions for other bottles?
Re: Choking while bottle feeding (Avent bottles)
Dash was gasping and dribbling with the Avent so we switched to the cheapy Gerber bottles ... presto! No more dribbling.
I don't know why. Smaller nipples maybe?
Our son is in the NICU so I've experienced this many times. Blue mouth is very scary!
DS choked when the nipple flow was too much. You could try getting a slower flow nipple. If not, you could try feeding her side-lying. That's what they do in the NICU. It helps to keep the airway open if they get behind in sucking/swallowing.
She probably does OK breastfeeding because she can control the flow of milk and she's side lying.
We've been using the slowest flow Dr. Brown's bottles and our son can keep up, but every baby is different.
We didn't have problems to the point of mouth turning blue, but Avent bottles did not work for us (flowed too fast, milk everywhere).
We switched to Playtex Drop-ins.
Hmmm. I use Avent and this does not happen. She chokes on the breast sometimes because of my forceful letdown...
Sometimes I have noticed that if you tip the bottle down the milk is squirting out forcefully- so you have to squeeze at the base of the nipple to get the air out so it just comes out in a drip...maybe try that?! Or definitely a new bottle.
