Provera for AF & ovulation ?

Hi ladies,

I started my first round (of 3 prescribed) of Provera at the beginning of April to bring on AF and hopefully get my cycle working again. I went off the pill last summer and have not ovulated since.  I've been charting, and am continuing to do so this cycle.  I did actually get AF the day after my last pill and it lasted 6 days.

My question is if I suspect (based on my chart) that I do actually ovulate before I am supposed to start the next round of Provera on May 1, should I still take it?  My doctor told me that if I happen to get pregnant while taking the Provera, it's actually okay, but then I've also read that if you are taking it and get pregnant, you should not suddenly stop.  So that would be a problem since I'd finish the 10 pills before a HPT would necessarily show positive.  What do y'all think?  I am definitely going to call him at the end of the month if I do think I've ovulated, but just wondering if anyone has any insight.  I haven't seen this topic come up here yet.

 Thanks!

  • You shouldn't take any progesterone until ovulation is confirmed, or it will mess your cycles even more so. My first doc wanted to start my provera every month, but I learned that cycles got worse with that, so now I don't take it until 3dpo or cd45, whichever comes first; that way I give myself a chance to ovulate on my own (which I have done as late as cd26).

  • Thanks for your advice, but what if I never do ovulate??

  • that is why I said take it by cd45, that way you still start your next cycle in a reasonable amount of time.

ETA: Oh by the way, Provera is NOT recommended for pregnancy while Prometrium is and is often taken for the first trimester by many ladies. I would ask to switch to Prometrium.

  • I agree with previous poster. I just got my 4th round of Provera. My doctor told me to make sure to make sure I'm not pg before I use it. And I did. It was -. So here I am. And I guess it will be differnet for me this cycle since she will be monitoring me on CD21 to see if I did not O before she gives me the greenlight for the next round of Provera.

  • The first time I took Provera was after a 118 day cycle, so we knew I was having issues. I started taking it again today on CD43 (my ob told me to call after 40 days), I'm charting so I knew I didn't ovulate and I took a HPT just to confirm I was not pregnant. HTH! GL!
