Middle name too similar to nephew's first name??

My asian name means Jade in English.  Ever since we started dating, my husband said he wants to give our daugther (if we have one) the middle name Jade, after me.

One of my close cousins recently had a son and named him Jaden.  She and I never talked about names in the past.

Do you think it's too close for me to give my daughter the middle name of Jade?

Would you be upset if you were in my cousin's shoes?

Re: Middle name too similar to nephew's first name??

  • My middle name is very similar to my first cousin's first name.  Never been an issue, I'm not sure anybody even notices.  Nobody has ever said anything about it to me, my cousin, or my mom.

  • I think it's fine to use the name. If you really think your cousin might be upset, I just would just talk to her about it beforehand.
  • I wouldn't worry.

How often are you announced by your first and middle names?   The last I was announced using both names, I was at my college grad.

Your baby's middle name will be on her birth announcement.  Then, in day to day life and at family gatherings, everyone will be calling her by her first name.

Come to think of it, I can only think of the middle name of one of my cousins. And we are all close.

If she ends up being upset by this, she is over reacting.

  • No way... Jade is a beautiful name and I would be honored if I were her...

  • If I were in your cousin's shoes, it wouldn't even cross my mind that the names were similar. I don't even think if they were the same name that she would have reason to be upset.

It is just the middle name, which most people will never even know. I know some families that use the same middle names for everybody in the whole family. I'd use it if you like it.

  • I think it's perfectly fine. If Jade was going to be the FN, I think it would be too close, but for a MN, not at all. Very pretty, and it's so fun that it ties to the meaning of your name.

  • Perhaps she had similar thoughts when she named her son Jaden?

     I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I wouldn't worry about it, especially since it is a direct connection to your name. I think it is a good choice!

  • I dont think it's a big deal at all! Jaden has became such a common name now anyways, so it's not like you were taking a very original name. Plus it has meaning to you and is not the same thing. I would still say go for it even if it was the same name I would still say the same, it's only the middle name and people rarely are called by their middle name.
  • Middle names are usually not to controversial....It seems like middle names repeat often...Im actually thinking of using Grace as a middle name and my cousin's daughters middle name is Grace and I don't forsee it being a problem.

  • I don't see it being a problem because it has meaning.

  • With it being a middle name I was not see an issue...And it means something to you and DH, something yall have talked a bout since before being pregnant so I would go for it...
  • I wouldnt think of this as an issue. One is a first name and other is middle
