Its my husband's grandmother's name, so I associate it with an old lady. But she is so sweet, and it is a very pretty name. If I were to use it though, I would use it as a nickname for another name.

Vera, to me, = a very nice "old" lady I knew when my sister and I were kids. She was probably in her late 20s. She worked the night shift in the ER and had a boa constrictor she kept in a steamer trunk. She also always had goldfish crackers for us.

It's also Jayne's most favorite gun in firefly.

And it's sometimes short for Veronica, which is one of my favorite Elvis Costello songs.

So while it might be old fashioned, it's also awesome.

While I love the name in the context of Vera Wang (pretty, elegant), sadly I think of Vera DeMilo, Jim Carrey's masculine female body-builder character on In Living Color.
