MRSA, Chicken Pox, who knows?? LONG

This past Thursday, my niece was diagnosed with MRSA (aka Staff Infection). She had tiny little bumps on her back and a large abscess(sp?) near her butt. They put her on antibiotics.

Well....I didn't know that she had this until Saturday. Apparently it can be highly contageous?? To be honet, I had to google it because I knew nothing about it. Chase just so happened to spend the entire day with her on Friday and even swiped a few drinks from her sippy cup.

Saturday, we wake up and I am wiping Chase down and he has these 3 weird dots on his back. They look like spider bites or even like pimples. Raised up with a hard bump. I'm talking to SIL and she tells me all about my nieces diagnoses and to call the doctor, etc, because it sounds like the exact same thing.

Great. So I call the Pedi office (which is closed btw) and the on-call doctor calls me back. I wasn't expecting her to diagnose him over the phone, but at least to tell me if it can wait until today for an appt or if I should go to the ER over the possibility of a staff infection.

Longer story short, I took Chase to the ER on Saturday. We were basically in and out in record time (under an hour). They just pushed it off as Dermatitis ( i think they were looking more at his excema) and prescribed him a cream.

Well the damn little bumps are spreading and multiplying!! He has 3 more on 1 arm, 2 on his lower back, 1 by his ear lobe, 2 on his opposite shoulder and 1 on each leg. Of course, his 1 year appt got rescheduled last month and isn't until next week, so he hasn't even had the chicken pox shot. They don't seem to bother him (only the 1 by his ear). I just wish I knew what the hell it was.

  • Is your Ped open today? ?If you're still worried then definitely take him in. ?

  • Take him back to a doctor and do it ASAP.  MRSA is no joke, and not all doctors are familiar with MRSA and what it looks like.  If at all possible, go to an infectious disease specialist or, at very least, a derm.  And do it today.  Don't take no for an answer until he has been tested for MRSA - and you should get tested too while you're at it.

I won't frighten you with all the horror stories about MRSA.  If you've googled it, you already know more than you ever wanted to.  Suffice it to say that DH had it about a year ago.  He's absolutely fine now...because he spotted it right away and caught it as soon as it popped up.  And even though he had it, neither DD nor I were carriers - though we did both get tested.

In all likelihood, DS is just fine.  But, of the off chance he isn't, the earlier you catch it, the easier it'll be to treat.

Good luck...and let us know what happens.

  • I would definitely take him to his pediatrician today. I dont know if MRSA spreads around the body like that, they had a breakout here last year in our school district and the paper work said it looks like a spider bite and it often mistaken as a spider bite. But it could be the chicken pox, so I would want to be sure.
  • I know how you feel,  this is my story .   A week ago I went to my mil house  to pick her up to take her to the stores.  While I was waiting my bil was with his grandson on the couch.  The baby he's 14 months old was in a tshirt and a diaper.  I saw he had something on his leg that looked like a mosquito bite or almost like if he had a vaccination there.  I touched the spot and did not know what it was I asked my bil what it was and he said Mrsa.  I had no clue what that was but mil was ready to go so i jumped up and left.           That night I come home and  asked my husband what that was he looked at me with shock.     He told me that was not a good thing and talked to his mother .      My mil then told him that the baby had mrsa but 3-4 weeks ago and he already been treated with the antibiodics and was not contageous.

Although that may be the case, I was still worried and a bit upset that I did nto hear about it because my mil has been watching my ds for the past month at her house and the baby ( her great grandson) has also been there playing with my ds.

We called his peds office right away and they told us that unless my ds has any pimple like or bumps on his body we should not worry. My dh asked about me and the nurse said that if the pimple i touched was  big or with pus/infected then i should get checked out.  But since my mil  said it was 3-4 weeks ago and he was already treated I should be fine.

I will admitt that im still a bit scared and keeping an eye out for any bumps on him and I.         I have not talked to my doctor because I have been fine and seems like those are the first signs of the infection.    Anybody else go through something like this?

  • Thats what got me nervous too. DH works in a hospital and as soon as I said MRSA, he freaked out, which is why we went to the ER even though the on-call pedi said to monitor it.

Both the on call doctor and the ER doctor said that if they only spent the day together, and she just got it, it is probably rare that he has it. He would have had to come in direct contact with the bumps on her skin. But they are located on her back and under her clothes, so that wouldn't have really been possible. They said to use the cream 3 times a day, always check for a fever and it they start to ooze or get puss, then to go back to the ER or come in immediately.

I'm going to call and talk to his real pedi today.

  • Oh no!  Is this Mercedes?

Yes, I would definitely call the pedi today and insist that you want to get Chase seen.  Explain to him/her the situation.  MRSA is no joke and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Let us know how it goes, ok?  Poor Chase.  :(

  • Cheryll - yes, Mercedes. I have affectionatly named her my lilttle germ-bot. Chase barely ever gets sick, but if he does, he catches it from her.
  • That poor little girl has been through waaay too much for someone so little.  Ugh.  Awful.

I hope the two of them are feeling better soon!

  • The thing is, besides the bumps on his skin, he is completely fine. We were in the ER waiting room and he was happy and jumping and laughing. Even this morning, he has showed no signs of discomfort or fever or anything.

He has been touching the one by his ear, but I honestly can't tell if he is doing his new "i'm on the phone" type thing with his hand or if the bump itself is bothering him.

  • Tam, I would still have him seen, even if he's acting fine.  If he needs to get on antibiotics, it's better to do it sooner than later.

Sean has a friend who deals with MRSA (in his job) and it's not something to take lightly, IMO.  Could be no big deal...but better safe than sorry.

  • MRSA is an antibiotic resistant staff infection (methacillin). He needs to be seen by his doctor as soon as possible because it can have serious consequences. I cannot BELIEVE your niece's parents brought her around and didn't tell you about her diagnosis. It is highly infectious and I know when patients are MRSA positive in our hospital they are in isolation.
