Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What age to start Ferber?

My little one is 3.5 months...is this too early? She still doesn't sleep longer then 4 hours at night.

Re: What age to start Ferber?

  • too early...I believe it is like 6 months...I asked the doctor at 4 month and she said no...she also said no food until after 6 months though...we are starting at 5....

  • Since you are asking this then you really need to do more research on the pro's an con's of this method as well as the other methods that are out their.

  • I have done some research on it.  I also know that at around 4 months they can go up to 6 hours without eating.  My little one is eating every 2 hours and has more than doubled her birth weight already.  It sucks.  I work full time and I feel like a zombie.

Well, that's what the average child can do. So will longer periods, some will go shorter periods, and that's normal.

    Give it until 6 months.

  • Are you FF or BF?
  • Breastfeeding.  I pump during the day for her bottles when I'm at work.  She typically will sleep for 4 hours at night and then wake up every 2.  During the day all bets are off. She has no routine.  =

  • Hmmm, I ff, bf is a different animal so I'd hate to give you suggestions there, maybe some of the other bf can chime in with some feeding/soothing advice.  I'd hate to see you start Ferber this early, hopefully you can tweak her schedule/routine a little bit to may nightime a little easier.
  • I feel your pain.  Have you asked your pediatrician?  My pedi told me it was okay let LO CIO at 13 weeks if they are at a certain weight.

     Good luck!

  • Not sure about when to start Ferber - I had a friend that did it at 6 weeks (which I thought was WAY too early, but her pedi told her that babies can sttn at 12 lbs.). I will tell you that making a routine/schedule for the day was the BEST thing I ever did for my twins.  Granted there are 2 of them, so there was really no other option (I was NOT going to be feeding babies on demand every 1-2 hours like they would have liked...)  I just started putting them down for naps around the same time every day, feeding them around the same time every day, and started a bedtime routine.  Now their daycare lady does the same thing since I went back to work.  Two weeks ago they started sttn from 8:30p-6:00a.  I realize that they may still wake up every so often and want to eat in the middle of the night, but they have really stuck with their routine (that I forced upon them :)) GL!!
