Motorcycle while pregnant?

My DH has a Harley and we usually love going on afternoon rides in the summer. I'm really torn about whether I should go on the bike while pregnant. It can obviously be a little dangerous whether or not you are pregnant. I don't plan to go on with a huge belly when I'm 7 or 8 months but how bad would it be to go out in the next few weeks? What do you girls think? What would you do?

  • I feel very strongly that you should not.

  • There is no way in hell I'd do that, sorry.
  • I would think that the only risk would be crashing, and that's not stopping you from driving in a car.  I guess it depends on how you feel about it, and dh's driving.
  • My Dh has one too and there is no way I would go on it now or earlier in the pregnancy. Just not worth the risk to me, because they are so dangerous!

  • I wouldn't, but I wouldn't even if I wasn't pregnant because I'm a scaredy-cat.
  • meh, I wouldn't. If you got in an accident you could lose your child. Not to be morbid but that's the reality. I grew up near a corner that often had motorcycle accidents. Not one of them was a minor accident either.

  • the best way i can think of this is to compare it to downhill skiing, something i love that i've had to give up.  obviously, you can say you'll take all the precautions and be careful, but IF something were to happen through no fault of my own, i would never forgive myself!

  • I wouldn't chance it.  I hate when my DH goes out because there are many crazy people on the road!

  • We also have a harley, and I have been on a few rides since being pregnant. I asked Doc about it cause I wasn't sure about it. We go on short rides. I can't say that it is something that I will do much longer, and I will say that there was one ride where I got very sick from the motion and that wasn't fun, so that ride was really short.
  • I ride a quad (dirt bike) and my doc said it would be ok for me to still go on flat trail rides that aren't too bumpy. We haven't gone out to ride since the BFP for other reasons, but I probably would still have jumped on my bike. Off road riding is a little different then a street bike though. I don't have to worry about the idiot drivers around me.
  • I figured. I was also thinking it is a bad idea and I would be way too nervous to have any fun but a small part of me was hoping I was being too cautious! You have all confirmed what I was thinking. DH will have to go out alone :(

     Thanks.

  • I wouldn't.

I live in Queens and go to school in Manhattan. ?Its a long commute on the subway/buses so I began riding a scooter. ?I finally gave it up last month at the urging of my husband. ?As much as I didnt want to and as much as I truly HATE riding the subway, the above quote is what finally convinced me. ?There are just other people out there that you cannot control and a lot of them are reckless. ?Although nothing is perfect, you just arent very protected on a bike like in a car. ?

    All the best.?

  • I wouldn't.  I also am the same person that gets nervous just LOOKING at the things.  I've known too many people that have died or been very badly injured in accidents.  After one of my professors was killed (who I'd known for almost 4 years and really looked up to), I swore I'd never get on one... and made DH do the same... and he understands.

Yes this is my stance too

My hubby has a harley and he used to take me for rides on occasion before we got pregnant. ?It is a risk?since?you don't have a?crunch?zone and seatbelt like in a car but even a minor accident on a bike while pregnant may result in loosing your child... so I would say no.?

My hubby is a very safe rider but its the other stupid people on the road that I worry about!?

I agree.  I personally wouldn't do it, but it really depends on how comfortable you feel about it.

  • I definetly would not go. I feel like there is a bigger risk of getting hurt.

  • i definitely would not, but i wouldn't pre-pregnancy either - i have seen way too many patients in the icu as a result of motorcycle accidents.  in the medical field we often call them donor-cycles.  just too dangerous, imo
