Pediatric recs near Minneapolis (also ?'s about Southdale Peds)

Hi all,

Time to find a pediatrician for the baby. We live in downtown Mpls. Southdale Peds was recommended by our OB/GYN office, just wanted to hear more about them, and specific doctors within that practice (we would go to the Edina location).

Any other recs are welcome. Most important are quality of care, clinic hours (evenings and weekends would be nice), distance from our home (within 10 miles preferably) and anything else I'm not thinking of. Big Smile

Thanks in advance!

  • We just started going to Edina Peds which is right by Southdale hospital and mall in Edina. LOVE IT! There are two female peds + one female CNP and they have great weekend hours. It's been there for over 30 years and they were wonderful doing a CBC blood test to see if my daughter actually had an infection instead of just giving us a presc for antibiotics.

  • I didn't really research a pedi before giving birth (at Southdale)- I just used our general practice doctor's office as a reference because I was told they did rounds at the hospital. Long story short- they do not, or they weren't on the day I gave birth, so another pedi doing rounds had to see me. I saw a doctor from Caring for Children (or some such name) in Eden Prairie. Very cool doctor- but not convienient for us living in Mpls. I then chose Metropolitan Pediatric Specialists after asking around the nurses at the hospital. So far I've been a different doctor nearly every time I go in (just feeling them out) and I think I prefer Doctor Harrington. Their hours are great- weekends available. Once I had to bring DS to urgent care at the hospital but it was closed so I would have had to bring him to the ER. I noticed that Metro Peds was still open (until 7 I think) so I went in there and they were able to get me right in, which I thought was pretty impressive!  The nurses also recommended Edina Peds. Next time I will be sure to choose a clinic that for SURE does regular rounds at the hospital because that was sortof a fiasco at the time.

  • We use Fairview Children's Clinic... so far we've been really happy with them. They're open until 8pm on weekdays, and I think they may be open weekends too, but I'm not sure. They're pertty centrally located too,
  • We use Metropolitan Pediatrics too.  So far I really like them!  They have great hours and will see you for well visits on saturdays!

  • I went to Southdale Ped's when I was growing up (Burnsville location).  I did recognize several Dr.'s on their website that I used to see when I was a kid.  Southdale area is relatively convenient to us in Mpls and they have a walk in strep clinic (not that it's super applicable for a baby, but I teach preschool so I hear parents rave about that aspect a lot).

We had a speaker at our class from Caring for Children in EP that we both absolutely LOVED, but that's too far for us to go on a regular basis.

  • We love Pediatric Associates in St Louis Park. Very personalized care and easy to get appointments.
  • We LOVE Southdale Peds. DH and I took the birth classes at Abbott and they had Dr Skallerud from Southdale Peds talk at one session. I called the next day and asked if I could have her as our pediatrician. She fits my philosophy (had great recommendations when I said I wanted to make my own baby food, is very supportive for breastfeeding, is very honest when it is best to let a sickness run its course instead of just handing me antibiotics so I feel like I'm doing something, etc) She is one of the most popular doctors though so it is difficult to get in to see her. I have to schedule the check ups at least a month in advance. So twice we've seen other doctors when DD was sick. We really liked them both, Dr. Williams and Dr. Neis.
