  • I don't agree. I think if you go by two first names, that sounds redneck. Billy Jo, Jim Bob, etc...

I think "filler" names are classic, common names that are usually family names that they can throw in to honor loved ones.

they're the ones that are very common and become the "fallback" middle names. here's what name nerds says about them:

"Many people don't give middle names much thought, that's why, if you're female, you're middle name is probably Ann, Lynn, or Marie. That's also why most of your friends also have the middle names Ann, Lynn or Marie. Name connoisseurs call them "filler" names, or "throw-away" names because they seem to be just that- a pretty sounding name that doesn't have much substance that acts as a 'bridge' from the first name to the last name."

  • I agree. I HATE Ann, Marie, Lynn, etc. So blah. And one of those is *MY* mn - thanks Mom!
  • My middle name is Renee and I love it. I do not consider it a filler name either because my father picked it for a very specific reason.

i hate mine too! it was christine (until i got married) and it seems like everyone born in the mid-80s had that mn! i'm not giving my kids "double first names" because most of them sound ugly to me now.

  • Well, they may not be filler.  My mn is Lee but it's after my Dad.
  • So, by someone having the first name of Nicole or Anne means thay have a meaningless name???? I think a lot of times they have some meaning from family etc. For instance, my moms middle name is Lynn as her grandmothers name was Maddalynn, I will consider using Lynn to honor my mom if it sounds good with whatever first name we pick...not a filler.

  • I think they can be filler names but if they are family names w/ special meaning, I would not really call them that. Common nn's in my area are Marie, Ann, Lynn, Rose (my mn) and Elizabeth.

Newer common ones are Claire, Elise, Nicole, Kate and Grace.

I have never met anyone w/ the nn Lou, Jo, Jane, or  May, they sound very southern to me.

I actually really like Louise as a mn.  And we may use Rose or Eliseabeth, as they are family names.

i think it's just because so many people use them now (some to honor family and some just because they are popular) that they seem like an afterthought. obviously, not everyone who uses those names is doing it because they couldn't think of another one, but it doesn't change the fact that they are kind of the go-to middle names now and it seems like they are everywhere.

  • Around here the standard go to mn is Elizabeth or Katharine. I actually really like both of those names though!

Luckily you get to choose your childs name. You can jazz up their mn all you want.

yes i hear those and olivia all the time, too! the difference is they don't sound like "middle names" when you first hear them because they are used so much as first names.

lol something tells me you must love all the horrid trendy names.

  • I never put much weight/pressure on the middle name, mostly bc I don't care lol. It never gets used anyway. However, I do prefer to use a family name if possible (son's mn will be his father's mn). Anywho, I am from the midwest and only consider one of those mn as "redneck." That would be Jo. All the rest don't really conjure up any negative redneck associations to me.

    ?

I have SOOOOO many friends whose middle names are Elizabeth and Katherine, with your definition, I could definitely classify Elizabeth as a "filler" mn. ?

i agree that jo is the first and worst that comes to mind. i guess it's just different everywhere, i went to smaller schools and since there are only a couple "good" private schools in tulsa, we all basically grew up together. i think i knew almost everyone's middle name at some point. not because they went by those names, but because anytime there is a more formal thing that requires a program, full names are used. i guess not everywhere is like that.

  • I really can't stand Lynn, Marie and Ann as middle names. It just screams zero imagination. I realize that sometimes they have significance but they became the standard middle names in the 60s/70s and never seem to have gone away. There was a poll on a local board I'm on and about 80% had either Ann, Marie or Lynn as a middle name.

And whenever people ask for middle name suggestions, there are always tons of people who offer these 3 names whether they sound nice with the first name or not. Grace is quickly becoming this generation's Ann, Lynn or Marie.

  • I hate filler middle names, but I think I define them differently than you do.  I hate it when people just randomly pick a short name as a middle name when that name has no meaning to them.  Like Ann, Leigh, etc.  Seems like half the people I grew up with had the middle name Leigh.  I think middle names should be used to honor family.  If you give your name the middle name Ann in honor of someone, I think it's great.  If you use Marie, etc. just because it seems like a "middle name," then I hate it.

  • I HATE that people pick a middle name so it sounds good with the first.  I think a middle name should honor family also.  My dd is named after my mother, it's not filler.  if the next one is a girl, her mn will be after my dh's mother which is Leigh, it's not filler.   And my middle is Mae after both my paternal and maternal grandmothers, again it's not filler. Hope you pick a family name because if not then the middle name will be "filler" no matter what you pick.

  • Not a fan of the filler thing, either. My mn is Marie... child of the 80s. And so is practically every other girl I meet.

  • My middle name is Nicole. Yes, I was born in the mid-80s. Yes, my mother just picked it b/c it was popular. Yes, there were at least 10 other girls in my class with the middle name Nicole. I wish my mn had more meaning, you know?

  • I have a "filler" middle name (Lynne) but it's my aunt's first name, so at least there was a reason to use it.
  • LMS05LMS05 member

My mom and dad picked my mn, Marie, because it sounded nice. I guess I do have a "filler" mn. I wish I had a family name for my middle name, but when I was young I thought it was neat that both my best friends and I had the same middle name! I don't care if I have a filler middle name or a non traditional middle name. If it's "random" (not a family name) it's all the same to me....pointless/useless.?

I don't think you should assume that all names that sound like fillers are fillers. My cousin's middle name is Lynn, named after her mother's mn. My other cousin's mn is Lee, named after her mother's mn.?

  • My name is Kelly Ann...I love my name.  Ann is for St. Ann...not a filler.

I agree with this. To me, most of the names you mentioned don't sound redneck .

  • Um, yeah, not really sure how you think they sound redneck. ?My middle name is marie (a family name) and it doesn't make my whole name sound horrible. ?These "filler" names are usually passed down in the family, so they sound a little old fashioned because they are from past generations. ?

That's my cousin's name too.  And for the exact same reason.  I think every Kelly I've ever met also has the middle name Ann.

  • Of all my sibs and I, my nephews and niece and son, only my next-oldest sister has what would be a filler name, and it's not in the least. She is Rebecca Marie because she has the great honor of being named after my Grandma Marie. I think that's incredibly special, and she's always been very proud of her name. My grandma is a fantastic woman, and she's SO great, that my mother and SF both like her better than their own mothers, and that's why they decided to name their first daughter after her.

And traditionally, Catholics used Mary or Marie as a way to dedicate a child to the Virgin Mother. That's also how Anne came to be so well-used, in dedicating children to St. Anne, Mary's mother.

that's so sweet.  my mom's name is Ann Marie.

  • My middle name is Grace. ?It wasn't common at all before, and I hate that it is becoming a filler.

i just think it sounds redneck because every redneck person i know (including the ones in my family) have names like that and name their kids things like that. i know that they can also be family names but i think that most people use them because they are already "accepted" middle names. i actually like old fashioned names and i don't think any of those names sound old fashioned, that's why i don't consider names like elizabeth, clare, etc. fillers because they are so commonly used as first names as well. my middle name (until i got married) was christine and even though it was most popular in the 80s, i consider it a filler name and i think that "taylor christine" sounds really bad. i guess it's just a personal preference. it all seems so informal to me.
