Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I need help ASAFP.

Will is on ear infection #6.

Pedi prescribed Augmentin. We got home, tried to give it to him and as soon as it hit his mouth, he started projectile vomiting.

We called the pedi, pedi called in a script for Omicef (sp?). We tried giving it to him and he immediately gagged and puked.

Augmentin was flavored with cherry, as Will loves cherry Tylenol. The Omnicef was flavored with bubblegum, as he digs amoxicillin.

Neither are a go.

How the eff do I get this kid to take this medicine????

I like privacy. A lot.

Try mixing it in a bottle or with some applesauce? Good luck!

  • Put it in a bottle, the milk with make the flavor less intense for him.

Poor baby, I hope he feels better.

I hesitate to put it in a bottle because I don't want him to associate the bad taste with breastmilk.?

  • I'm no help with feeding him the medicine but I know that Augmentin is an extremely powerful anitbiotic.  When I've taken it I've gotten extremely nauseous and food goes right through me.  The only thing I can think of is feeding him the medicine right after he eats.  That way he has a full belly and it's less likely to upset his little tummy.  Good luck!!
  • that's a tough call...i'm sure you've tried everything:(

Have you tried placing TINY little bits (like a drop at a time) of the meds in the far back of his cheek? It takes a while...but he may at least get some medicine in him.

The other thing you could try is using some type of distraction...that will make him happy in the midst of giving him the meds. (Bubbles work miracles!)

GL! I hope your little man feels better soon:(

this. i would try to skip the augmentin altogether. i got a script for it last friday and threw up all day saturday until i got new meds on sat afternoon

  • I can understand not wanting him to associate a bad taste with BM, but do you think that he'd actually taste it b/c it's such a small amount in 4-6 oz. Will he eat cereal? You could put it in that. I hope you can get it into him. What about putting it in pedialyte? that way he could drink it down and mask the taste.

I agree. Augmentin wreaked havoc on my body, so I can't imagine what it would do to a little baby :(

  • We got a Relia Dose bottle.  They sell them at WalMart I think.  CVS had them but is clearancing them out.  Google Relia Dose.  It has worked for us since you can slowly squirt the medicine into the back of their mouths while they drink juice or whatever.
  • We are on infection #5 and started augmentin today.  DD usually takes meds very well.  She actually gets excited when she sees the tylenol or vitamin bottle.  She spit out most of her first dose and a bit of her second.  I would try doing a little bit at a time and I usually give it to her lying down on her changing table.....gravity helps it get to the back of the mouth.  Also, our pharmacy tech mentioned to give her food or milk first.

My doctor did give us a good piece of advice with any antibiotic, especially a strong one like augmentin.  Try giving baby some yogurt, or better yet get a probiotic powder from your health food store.  Antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria that belong in the digestive tract.  Probiotics or yogurt can help to put some back.  I mix the powder into DD food (cereal or bottle of BM) but not within 2 hours of antibiotic dose.
