Changes in ounces pumped??

How come one day I'll get 3.5oz and the next day I'll get 7oz and then I'll get 5.5oz?  All at the same time of day...my first pumping session after nursing DS.  It's usually between 1.5 and 2 hours after.  Yesterday I had to pump twice to get enough for one feeding, but today I got enough in one session.  Could it be what I'm eating?  Or maybe DS didn't eat the same amount this morning?

Re: Changes in ounces pumped??

  • I really hope someone has an answer to this, because I wonder it ALL THE TIME. At least it's nice to know I'm not the only one...

  • I thinik this happens to everyone.  It all depends on how much you've eaten, how much water you drank, how much sleep you got, how stressed you are, how comfortable you are, etc etc.  It seems like any little factor can throw things off.  Just know that its totally normal!  I only recently stopped stressing when I have a bad session/day.

  • I also experience this, but most often I'm pumping in the evening while DH feeds a bottle. I noticed that milk flow will seem to stop and as I continue pumping I'll move the pump around a little (angle it a little differently) and all of the sudden another ounce or two comes out in just a couple minutes. Last night this happened and it stopped at about 3 oz...then a few minutes later I had 5 oz! So I don't know if sometimes it stops at 3 and I think I'm done so I only get 3; whereas other times I keep going and end up with more.

That is the only explanation I can come up with, but I'm not sure it's true because even when I'm trying to get more sometimes I can only get 3.

So maybe it just happens to everyone.
