how long for soft soled shoes vs. tougher sole?

DS is just starting to walk and getting better at it. He is still just wearing Robeez. I have put him in tougher soled shoes, but they just seem heavy and clunky for him. Does he need to be more steady on his feet before making the switch?

Re: how long for soft soled shoes vs. tougher sole?

  • I switched once he was walking on a regular basis.  Probably about 3 weeks after his first steps.

  • DD has been walking regularly for about 3 weeks now & I just got her a pair of Stride Rites that have a harder sole. She will probably still wear her Pedipeds for awhile too since they still fit.

  • I waited until she was a very good walker.  She JUST got her 1st pair of hard soled shoes a month ago.
  • DD has been walking for almost 4 months and I still prefer the soft soled shoes, she does have some harder soled, though still flexible, ones from stride rite and I find she trips a little bit more in them.
  • My little one gets physical therapy once a week for gross motor delays.  His PT suggested we have him in hard soled shoes now while he is walking more.  He walked in the insides of his feet and we have him in sneakers with inserts in them.  If his gait doesn't improve he will have to get orthotics.  I asked her about the hard soles vs. soft soled and she said once your LO's gait is better to put him in hard soles.  My DS's hasn't improved beyond the "new walker" stance but the inserts are supposed to help.
  • DD has been walking for over 6 months and still wears pedipeds, and will continue to do so as long as the 12-18 months fit, which will be AT LEAST fall, maybe even winter (so, 2 years old), her feet are slow to grow & she has plenty of growing room in this size, we just switched to 12-18m.
