Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Natural or D&C?

I haven't started miscarrying yet, but as soon as my baby's heart stops beating I will have to decide whether I want to have a natural miscarriage or a D&C.  I've heard pros and cons about both.  Natural:  can take ages to complete, but HCG levels decrease faster.  D&C:  quicker and less painful, but can take ages for HCG levels to decrease.  Are these impressions correct?  Which would you recommend?

Re: Natural or D&C?

  • How far along are you?

I have gone through both and I can tell you that I had my D&C yesterday morning and I have had no bleeding or cramping. It was super simple but also very emotional.

My natural one was in January and it was just like a normal period. I think it was more emotional to go through because you know in your mind what you are bleeding out.

    Hope that helps.

So sorry you are going through this.

  • I had a D&C for my other 2 miscarriages and they were over and done with. This one I am doing it naturally and I would have rather done a D&C but my DR. said that since I just had one end of December that this was the better way.

BUT to me, I feel it's torture. Friendly reminder each time I go to the bathroom. And I miscarried on March 1st. Still bleeding and clots are back.

  • I would go D&C, it was more emotional, but I just wanted it over with.

  • I went D&C it was quicker and I would have lost too much blood if I miscarried naturally.  I found it was a simple procedure and my body bounced back pretty quickly.  By the next week my lining had returned to normal and my HCG levels had decreased dramatically.  Four weeks after my D&C I ovulated and got my period 12 days later.  The emotional side takes longer and I did not feel like trying again until a few days later when my period showed up.  I am taking TTC very slowly this time around and I am just now starting to enjoy life around me again and moving on.

  • I waited 3 wks to m/c naturally and when nothing happened I had a D&C. I got my period 5 wks after my D&C, so it didn't take too long for my levels to drop. They had already started dropping some before though. It wasn't bad at all, they put me to sleep and I was only sore for a few days afterwards adn they gave me pain killers. I did have spotting for 2 wks afterwards. Good luck!
  • I began m/c last Thursday and decided to let it happen naturally and only have a D&C as a last resort if necessary. My follow up appt is Monday, so that's yet to be decided, but I thought I'd share my experience. I cramped for about 5 days, but only 3 days were severe. It was pretty painful, but I'm sure your doctor would prescribe pain medication. I was taking Lortabs leftover from a dental surgery and they weren't really doing much other than taking some of the edge off, but it was a very low script. I bled pretty heavily for about six days, passing tissue and clots, but by Wednesday of this week I was back to normal and everything had stopped. I am hoping that the u/s Monday will show that I have passed everything since I there are no longer any signs of m/c.

The physical discomfort aside, I think the emotional part is different for everyone. I had a hard time feeling and seeing the tissue pass because I knew that was supposed to be my baby, but on the other hand, I am glad that I got to be the caretaker of that and that I could bury it as I would a child instead of it being surgically removed and discarded (I am not 100% sure that's what happens with D&C, just an assumption).

I'm so sorry you are being faced with this choice, but listen to your heart and make the decision that seems most healing for you and your DH.

  • I miscarried at 12 weeks and my doctor told me that although I may start bleeding on my own, it would be very hard for me to pass everything naturally and might end up having to have a D&C.  This is when I decided to get it over with.  I felt like having the D&C done gave me some physical closure and then we could start to heal emotionally.  I had little to no bleeding/cramping afterwards.  The oddest thing has been shooting pains through my breasts.  They had gotten pretty large when I was pregnant and now they are shrinking and the pains aren't terrible, just strange!  Good luck with whatever you decide.
  • I had a D&C on Tuesday, and I was feeling ok by Thursday.  I went back to work yesterday, and have just had some cramping and minimal bleeding.  We had no heartbeat as of Monday (we did one last U/S to make sure).

    Good luck with your decision.

  • My baby was 9 weeks ( I thought I was going into my 13th week) and my ob said it was up to me if I wanted to have a D&C or naturally mc.  I wanted to naturally MC but by yesterday it didn't happen (no cramping and no bleeding) so I had my d&c today.  My OB said my levels should return to normal quicker with d&c and I wouldn't bleed as much as I would have if I mc naturally.  Now that it's all over, I'm very happy that I had a d&c today, very little cramping so far and the bleeding really isn't bad yet..I know now that I can start healing emotionally from this.  It's a personal choice though :-)
  • With the 1st, I had the option.

    1) I wanted more time to give confirmation that baby was not alive - could my dates have been off, what if?  etc.

I miscarried naturally before my follow up u/s.  I was 11 weeks and for the first day I gushed - like your water breaking but it was blood.  This time I was 6 weeks and it was a little heavier than a normal period.
