Where are the studies: yellow in baby rooms

So I read a comment by JCM earlier today that babies are known to cry more in yellow rooms.  I had never heard that, but am planning to paint our nursery yellow and was concerned.  A google turns up lots of links that say "Studies say..." but NO ONE actually cites any studies.  I can't find any actual study anywhere.  I want to know WHAT the studies actually did.  Are we talking traffic light yellow?  Or pale yellow?  Was the study of 10 infants?   Or 1000?  Can anyone actually give me specifics before I change our whole nursery decoration scheme?

Re: Where are the studies: yellow in baby rooms

  • Red has information on it, but she's not around at the moment.

  • That's a good question... I honestly don't know. My brother and I shared a room when he was a baby, and my parents painted it yellow when he was around 9 months... I don't remember them ever complaining. I honestly say, "do what you want, it's your room." That's just my opinion.
  • My MIL spoke with a friend of hers who is a art teacher because was concerned about my wanting to use Tiffany Blue in the room if it was a girl (it's not, and if it were, you bet your a** it would have been a Tiffany Blue room).

Here's what she said to make her argument:

"ok... ... light colors no dark --tiffany blue is too dark unless u bring it up a few tints to a much lighter blue....
the colors that r best for young kids: warm pinks, warm blues, greens - mint or line (but not too yellow more neutral)  lemon/pale yellow .... again not the dark versions but lighter one... doesn't have to be "pale" pastels but pastels ... remember color is darker when used in large areas so u want to keep it warm and sunny.... but not bland (which is why no grey tone of those colors or grey)

colors not to use for a young kid: NO red, black, grey, purple, orange or browns (red browns, grey browns, dark browns, or even tans) these colors r either too stimulating for a young kid or too depressing and not stimulating enough....
white is ok if there is a balance with any of the ok colors (one wall, most other stuff like furniture, bedding, curtains, etc)
keep "primary colors " to a room that is mostly white then they r ok otherwise they r too strong for a young kids bedroom (but fine for a playroom or bathroom) primary colors r fine for an older kid... 5yrs+
remember the room needs to be calm for sleeping, but also stimulating for the brain (red etc r over stimulating and make it hard to get a kid to nap/sleep) also hang pictures/posters  (large) of animals/humans for the kid to "talk" to.... but not too many (2-3 is fine)"

I don't buy any of it, but others might and if you're not married to yellow and your baby will cry less if you change it, more power to you.

  • My husband's childhood nurser and "big boy" room were painted bright yellow. And mil said he loved it. He never fussed or cried. They can come up with a million studies to contradict everything, do what you think is best. I like pale yellow, I think it is soothing. I have it in my livingroom.?

If you end up not likeing it, change it to another color. ?

  • I am usually just a lurker, but I had to chime in.

My son's room is pale yellow...he is an awesome sleeper, always has been.  So my opinion is, if you like yellow, go for it.

  • I forgot to mention that my son's room is yellow as well, and I didn't consult my MIL's list when making the decision.  HA!
  • Our nursery will be a buttery yellow, because it's already painted yellow and I don't need another project right now. But my kitchen is also blue and supposedly that is a terrible color for kitchens because it's not very appetizing. We have never had a problem craving food in our kitchen!
