DD is getting tubes in her ears on Monday. I am very nervous about her going under anesthesia (though I have been through it all myself, it is just more difficult for me to see her go through it).

Anyone whose child that had this done what was your experience like? Was it difficult on him/her? They told us that DD can't have anything to eat/drink after midnight that isn't going to be a fun morning for us. Hopefully we get an early time, we are getting a phone call tomorrow about times and all and any questions. How long before the surgery did you have to arrive to the hospital? How long did they keep you after the surgery? Do they get an IV? Can you please share your experiences. Sorry for all of the questions.

DS is having tubes placed in a week and a half and I'm interested in the responses to this question too. We were told today to get to the surgery center at 6:30 for an 8:00 surgery. That's all I know so far.

DD got tubes back in January. We got to the surgery center around 5:30 and had surgery at 7:00. DD did not have an IV and they just barely put her under--just enough to keep her still. Within 15 minutes of them taking her from us she was back in our arms. She was quite groggy for about 20-30 minutes, but I nursed her and she was back to herself. As soon as I was done nursing we got to go home. We were on the road by 7:45 or so. It was a very good experience overall, but I was extremely nervous despite working in surgery previously. DD took everything very well and it was the best decision we ever made for her!

I do anesthesia for a living. My DS also had tubes in his ears many years ago. Here is my insight.

Anyone whose child that had this done what was your experience like? I went in with DS and sat until they took him for surgery. He was done in 20 minutes and the doc came to talk to me. About 20 minutes after that, I was sitting with DS in recovery.

Was it difficult on him/her? Not really, he fussed a little while waking up. He was hungry, but not in any pain.

Do they get an IV? No. Like I said, I do anesthesia for these surgeries all the time. Your child will go to sleep with an anesthetic agent through a mask, so no IV is needed. The procedure is very quick, so expect your DC to be done in a half hour or less...give or take a few minutes. They are very fussy when waking from the anesthetic. That is not that there is anything wrong, but a natural process of waking up and being disoriented as the anesthesia wears off. It might scare you to see that, but is easier if you know to expect it. It is much harder on the parent than the child, and it is heartbreaking to hand them over and walk away before the surgery. There are no tips for dealing with that. I cried...most moms cry. It is ok. Once they are awake, they will let you feed, so bring along some formula or plan to BF right after surgery.
