How to dress my newborn during fall-winter ..New to OR

I come from a tropical climate all year long.  I will be moving to Coos Bay ( S.coast OR) this summer and baby is due Sept2.  I have heard the weather is temperate and layers are key but what about a baby.  What are the essential things that I should buy thinking fall/winter.  Does he need a jacket/winter coat like a toddler?  Onesies, sweaters....???  Thanks!

  • You will definitely want onesies for layering. I would also invest in some fleece footed pjs for a newborn. And some good blankets. I wouldn't get a winter coat for a newborn... I would just bundle them up.

  • Welcome to Oregon!

I'm grew up in Coos Bay and visit a couple times a year, and no matter how warm it is during the day, the afternoons/evenings get pretty windy and chilly.  I usually put DD in fleece outfits and coats, or the one-piece snow type outifts.  The summer should be pretty nice though.  Hope you like it!

  • Definitely warm, footed pj's & outfits.  I had a winter baby in the NW the first time and what was really helpful was one of those things that goes in the carseat & zips up all around them.  You can put it over their face while going from car to store without them getting rain in their eyes.  Good luck acclimating to the NW...
  • DD was born just before the summer but this winter she's mostly been wearing a short sleeved onesie, pants, and a sweater. We also had a winter coat for her that we received as a Xmas gift but usually we put her in a fleece jacket when going out. When she was really small we just put a blanket over her car seat though.?
  • I just moved to  the Portland area a few weeks ago, but I highly recommend the fleece footed sleepers, and you can always layer a cotton footed, or footless sleeper underneath, and as previous posters suggested a warm fuzzy blanket over the carseat/stroller!
