Sometimes FB feels like HS all over again... anyone else??

Am I the only one that feels like Facebook is High School all over again!  Popularity contests of who can get the most friends... who can get most comments on their status, etc., etc., etc.

Don't get me wrong... I like FB, I'm gald I'm a member, I love seeing what my friends are up to... but really... sometimes I feel like its just ANOTHER high school popularity contest.

  • Hmmm, not really.

ETA: Sorry, that was a really short answer. I guess if one lets FB become a popularity contest, it could be. Just the same as if one lets this board feel clique-y or popularity contesty, it could become that.

  • As I've gotten older, I've come to think populatirty contests are what you make of them. the number of friends you have compared to another person only matter if you care about them. I have reasons for adding each of my 350+ "friends" but none of those reasons are just to have a notch on my popularity scoreboard. :)

I get that... but I guess it feels "in my face"... when several of my "friends" have bragged in their status about reaching "1000 friends", etc.  Really lame in my opinion.  Maybe you're point is right... I just need to ignore it.  Thanks B!

  • I guess I never looked to see how many friends my friends had.   I can see how it might be that way for some...

  • I feel you : )

I do think that people who post on FB like that just *are* like that, they're the ones that brag about things not worth bragging about and just generally like to show off.  FB is just the vechicle.

ugh! 1000 friends?  sorry - that DOES seem like a popularity contest.  I'd delete them as my friend if they were on my friend list. (Although I do that quite often).

  • I felt that way with myspace for sure, but not as much on facebook.

I would be annoyed if anyone was bragging about having 1,000 friends. I sort of pride myself on not having very many friends!

  • I know some people use FB as a business tool as well so having 1000 for some is like having a great client list. Maybe not something to brag about, but definitely something a potential client likes to see as it means they are well connected or have a good rep. Just another way of looking at it.?
  • I guess I never really looked at in that way.  But if their statuses are about how many friends they have than yeah that's a bit much.

I'm annoyed by other crap on FB right now like the 20-something family "friend" with the 5-month old son posting that it's SELFISH to have children when you're over 40.   I had to bite my tounge long and hard for that one!

Oooh - I hope *I* get 1000 friends for my swish account!!!  That's a pipe dream though! I'm hoping for 100 but would be happy with 50!  HA!

My Upline Leader for The Body Shop had started an account and added people who placed orders with her. I was a quick way to get in touch with them about orders and parties. And MrsBabySalute has over 1000 friends but I know she does alot of business related posting on her acct (scouting new locations and vendor meetings and such). It makes her look nie and pro-active to her clients! I love that!

And I am sure you'll get lots of Swish Fans!! Maybe in each email you have about design, put a link to your Swish FB page ?to encourage people to add it!?

Ditto this. But my friends are not bragging about how many friends they have and that could be annoying. However, I am always one to believe in I would rather have xx number of really GREAT friends than xx number of acquaintances so I don't let things like numbers get to me.

Here's my response:  Well when you hit your 40's and have your midlife crisis because you got married too young, don't come crying to me.  Been there, done that...got the t-shirt, the house, the career, and the kid.

    j/k

Whoa, that's a bit scary.  If one of my friends posted something like that, I'd probably respond with some smart-a$$ comment about getting your picture in the yearbook for most popular or something.  Yikes.

  • wow. People can be so lame. I don't know how many friends I have, nor do I know how many friends my friends have. Guess that's not why I use FB.

Have you changed your 'friends' groups to only see those that you want to keep close tabs on? Meaning, I've got a couple of friends groups.... 1 of just a few of my super close contacts that I want to keep up with, one for my high school 'friends' and the big group. So, essentially, I can see those that I want to 'hear from' without being bothered by all the stupid HS crap.

    or, twitter ;)

ditto. I'd probably just roll my eyes at that person. I don't know how many friends I have, nor do I care. and I don't pay attention to how many friends my friends have.

  • I *cringe* at some of the dumba$$ status updates some people feel they need to post.  One FB friend like clockwork posts around 8 am each morning..."needs coffee"  Why the fvck to I care!!!  Go get some already!!!

It is pretty HS, but it is pretty darn entertaining for the most part if you consider the sources and how lame they are in real life too.  I think it will come a time I will weed my friend garden to be my IRL friends and not just someone I went to HS with 16 + years ago

  • I dunno, I don't necessarily feel it's like HS.  Only because I hated high school and you couldn't pay me enough to do that all over again.  But I love FB!  And love catching up with people from HS and beyond.  It's all very entertaining.  Some people post super boring status updates - multiple times a day - and then some of the updates are fun!  As a boring suburban SAHM, I'm most entertained by relationship status updates.

I have to agree with Sheila in that you couldn't pay me enough to do HS again...but I can see where it would feel like HS. And, I get the same feelings, too. But I am very much entertained by the status updates and seeing what people are up to.
