Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Getting your baby to sleep with a lovie

How did this work for you?  My baby won't take a pacifier and she likes to nurse to sleep--most of the time she is not actually eating, just nursing for comfort.  I would love to replace my boob with something else that could comfort her to sleep.

Re: Getting your baby to sleep with a lovie

  • I just started putting him down with it.  He now rubs the tags while he dozes off to sleep in his crib.  We use it only while he sleeps.

Charlie doesn't take a paci either. And on Sunday, he just started consistenly sucking his thumb. So, now, he sucks his thumb, and with the other hand, he rubs the tags. It's so cute to watch on the video monitor.

  • I've been trying to introduce it for awhile and she has recently started taking to it.  I let her hold it when she is having her last bottle of the night- I've also rubbed it on myself so that it will smell like me (you can wear it in your shirt for awhile too).  Also when she is falling asleep I've stroked her face with it and now she has started doing that to help herself to sleep- we just started sleep training.
  • DD doesnt' sleep w/a lovey but likes to snuggle her blanket up to her chin.

  • Iris, you cosleep right? What worked for us bringing his "lovie" into our bed at night (the glowing seahorse). when he wakes I turn it on and sometimes he'll fall asleep - so now, I put it in his crib with him during naps. It seems to help him - not a full on lovie just yet but he falling asleep to it more and more (prob because it smells like me and DH from being in our bed and also it "sleeps" in the bed with us at night.)
  • I feel you pain, unfortunately I don't have any suggestions. ?I think most kids get attached to a lovey a bit later. ?However you could try to have your husband rock her to sleep so that you gets away from the boob habit.
  • We have been putting Em's lovey in bed with her since the day we stopped co-sleeping (around 4 months - I know, the horror!).  She only gets it when she naps or goes down for the night.  She rubs it against her face while she's falling asleep and it's all up on her face (which used to freak me out).

When I tried to get Em to stop nursing down I would put her lovey between me and her while she nursed for a week.  That helped too.

  • try wearing it in your shirt for a day first, then it will smell like you before you give it to her.
  • Thanks everyone!

  • Like you, I'm pretty sure I AM my baby's lovey. :)

She actually takes a paci, but I'd like to try and wean from it at some point (since she wakes up a zillion times a night when it falls out), so I've been desperately trying to attach her to a cuddly little Blabla doll... but she wants nothing to do with it. Instead she just curls right up with one hand possessively splayed on my chest and passes out. Sigh.

  • I talked to dr. about this at 12 month appt. because I wanted to make sure she could sleep with a blanket or stuffed toy, and he made me laugh because he said it wouldn't work unless there was a big boob on it.  LOL!

YES!!  totally forgot about "Sammy" the Seahorse (that's what my DH calls it).  We use that too, but she's partial to her blanket lovey.

  • Nurse with it.  Put it in the crib with her.  Any time she's looking for comfort, bring the lovie along too.  In fact, bring it almost everywhere for a while.

It took DS a good 3 months to get attached to his.
