Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Anyone have this kind of insurance?  Aflac has a policy that will allegedly pay you $500 per day for the first five days of being hospitalized for L & D and $100 per day after that.  The rate for the plan in only about $36 per month and you must not be pregnant at the time of signing up.  When I did the math, it looks like a win win.  This is above and beyond any bennies you get from other insurances.  They actually pay YOU directly.  Anyone head of this or had any experience?

I'm looking for ways to offset the cost of having a baby...just like I'm sure most people are;)  Any input is greatly appreciated!

Re: Hospital Indemnity Insurance

  • I used to be an Aflac agent years (about 3?) ago and from what I remember you are correct (policies may have changed over the years, don't quote me). It is not only for L & D it covers other things as well.  If you plan on becoming pregnant soon and by doing the math with your monthly premiums, and the amount of time you would be paying, if it matmatecially makes sense, do it.  Also, remember if your employer does a 1099 and it is deductible, you may have to wait until open enrollment to cancel.  So you could be paying extra premiums after the L & D.  You may not be able to cancel right after the birth if you wanted to.  Just something to think about when calculating money being paid out.  My cousin never had any payment issues with claims.  Her hubby got hurt at work and was paid out quite a bit by having the accident policy.

  • Thanks Wingsfan:)  I appreciate the info.  I, too, am a Wings fan by the way....Go Wings!;)

Congrats on your pregnancy.  My husband and I are TTC.  I am working on getting healthier before we go full throttle, but we hope to be expecting soon:)

  • Thanks and best wishes on your TTC. This is my second (and probably last) child.  I hope all goes well with you.  I see you are in Shelby.  I work in Shelby :-)
  • Yes, I live in Shelby (right off the 4 corners:  Sterling Heights, Shelby, Rochester Hills, Troy).;)

Do you live far from here?

  • I actually live in Auburn Hills also near 4 corners but mine are Rochester Hills, Troy, Auburn Hills, and Bloomfield Hills.  I grew up in Washington Twp and went to Romeo Schools "back in the day".  I currently work in Shelby Twp near the Washington Twp border.  I'm not too far from you though!
  • Too funny...I work on your side of town;)  I work at Beaumont in Royal Oak;)
  • That's funny!  That is where I had my son.  I will be having this one at Troy.
  • Do you mind if I ask who your OB/GYN is?  I love my doctor, but I'm not crazy about her partner.  You know how that is...the partner may be the one delivering potential baby down the road.  I don't want to leave the doc I have now, but am considering moving to another practice where I like the partners as well.  This will be (when I get pregnant!) my first baby and I'm scared just thinking about it!  I need someone to really be gentle and kind:)
  • I go to Oakland/ Macomb on South Blvd.  They are in the Wellpointe Building right off of M-59 and Dequindre.  I LOVE them and can't say enough wonderful things about them. I had 2 miscarriages last year and some hormone issues and while it took some time to straighten things out, they were great, tried everything they could, and  always get me in right away of I have a concerning situation.  There are 7 (4 women, 3 men) doctors and 3 midwives.  I have seen 4 of the 7 doctors so far and like all of them.  I also saw one midwife who was very nice, but due to a previous c-section, I can't use them for delivery. They have ultrasound and lab on site which is wonderful.   Although, for my 2 big ultrasounds they will be sending me to Beaumont to have them done (they let me choose which location I wanted for the scans Troy or Royal Oak).  They deilver out of Beaumont (primarily the Troy location).  Another great thing, anytime I have had a question I get a call back within 15-30 minutes.
  • That is good to know:)  I will definitely check them out.  I can see Wellpointe building from my house..so I'm very close:)

It's good to know that they are good about calling back so quickly too.  Some offices are just horrible about that!

I'm sorry to hear that you've had miscarriages.  I'll keep you in my thoughts that your pregnancy and delivery are safe and healthy:)

     Oh and GO WINGS!!!;)

     Have a great night!

     Jen
