Name Advice - be brutally honest

My DH and I cannot agree on a boy's name.  We want something not very common, but not too weird either.  I was looking over a website that suggests names and Joss came up.  I thought that it might work since it sounds like Joshua, but not as popular.  Thoughts?

Re: Name Advice - be brutally honest

  • To me that sounds like a girl name - short for Jocelyn.

  • Girl...Joss Stone
  • I don't like it. It sounds a little pretentious to me, and it makes me think of the singer Joss Stone, who is a woman.
  • I agree, sounds like a girl.

  • Its the type of name where I would ask you to repeat it, then spell it so I could say it correctly. ?not a big fan...
  • Joss makes me think girl, as in Joss Stone. But there's also the buffy guy, Joss Whedon...

    I don't dig it.

  • That is a girl's name, in my opinion. ?Now, my friend's just named their baby Jase. ?I do like that.

    Boy--Joss Whedon.

I actually find Joss hard to pronounce.  Unless I think about it, it comes out "Josh."

  • Ditto the PPers that say it reminds them of Joss Stone (a chick).
  • My DS has a name that most people have never heard of, and is not on most baby name sites, Joren. So I like different names;) My first thought with Joss was that it was a girl's name (you said be honest!) but I actually DO like it. If you find something you and your DH both agree on, go for it, no matter what other people say! Just be prepared to say repeat it and spell it all the time. That's what we have to do. Does your DH like it?

  • I think girl.... like Joss Stone.
  • Thanks for the opinions, ladies.  I don't want everyone that he meets to think, "Poor kid".  LOL
  • Yeah, sorry. It's a girls name.

  • Joss Whedon (producer of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse) is a Joseph who uses Joss as a nn.

And Josselin (or the French spelling Jocelyn) is actually a male name that was co-opted for girls only within the last 50 years.

  • When I first read it I was like, eek.  But, I think it could grow on me with more thought.  I could see myself friends with a cool guy name Joss :::shrug::::

  • Not to fond of it but I think there are tons of worse names

  • I actually really like it as a nickname- it sounds like a cool kid to me. ?It's just too nicknamey and potentially girly to be a given name to me. ?Maybe consider names it could be a NN for, like Josiah. ?
  • I must live under a rock --- I've never heard of Joss Stone.

Haha, I was just about to tell her about you. Good thing I read first!

Oh and I like it, but more for like a NN.

I think of Joss Whedon, and that's a good thing. I like it, but would prefer it as a nn.
