EPers: When can I pump less?

I've been pumping every 2-3hours (except at night, when I go 4 hours) since Trig was born 2 months ago. I was wondering, when can I start pumping less often? It would be nice to not have to pump EVERY time he eats and I know you can start dropping pumps at some point. I make between 25-30oz per day, is this good? Does that mean I can pump less now? Thanks for the advice!

  • I'm not an expert, but I believe you should keep this up until he's 12 weeks old. kellymom.com has some helpful info. Good luck!!

I started EPing when DD was a little over 3 months, and I pump every 4 hours...except at night, I go about 6 hours. Freeze any extra you have in case of a temporary supply dip (fenugreek works wonders for me), or his growth spurts.

  • I think the only one you can risk going longer is the night one.  But be careful.  Your DC will be eating more in the next weeks.

Keep it up as long as you can.  It will be worth the stash.

    Good luck!

  • I wouldn't do it any time soon- you really should watch Trig's intake. Around the four month mark my DD's intake shoot through the roof. so it just depends on how much he eats. and if you can stand to lose oz's. its SOOOOOOOOOOO difficult to increase your supply after 12 weeks. My DD was eating 45oz a day from when she was four months old until she was 8 months. And that is WITH starting solids at four months. Luckily i was able to pump that much a day. just saying- that as they get bigger so does their appetites. normally if you were BFing- babies would stimulate the extra milk- however with just straight pumping- if you don't pump LONGER when baby is showing an increase in appetite then you are going to keep 'level' and not produce more.

honestly i wouldn't drop pumps anytime soon. GL!

  • Ditto stacy.  Sorry.

DS ate 24 ozs from about 1 mo-4 mos.  At 4 mos, he hit a massive growth spurt and started eating about35-40 ozs/day.  Even after we started solids, his intake is still at 30 ozs/day.  I had over 100 ozs of frozen BM and that supply is gone.  And we've been using formula almost every day since January.  My production didn't really increase over 30 ozs/day (and I had to work really hard to get it there).

Get to the 12 weeks and your hard work will pay off.  Good luck!!!

  • I unfortunately have to agree with everyone else, wait the full 12 weeks. I know it really sucks, but you'll be glad you did in the long run.
