3rd Trimester

Prenatal massage at 35 weeks?

Is this a bad idea? I've been on modified bedrest since 16 weeks but my doctors have started hinting I will hopefully get some more freedom when I hit 34 weeks.

Our 5th anniversary is the following weekend so we're planning a stay at a fancy hotel with a great spa, and I booked a prenatal massage/body treatment. However, I'm only 29 weeks now and already am pretty gross and get uncomfortable laying down - will I be able to enjoy the massage that far along or would I just be distracted by discomfort and aches and gigantic-ness?

Re: Prenatal massage at 35 weeks?

  • I had one at 36 I think and it was WONDERFUL!  I know I was past 35 weeks for sure.

  • My sister had one done at 32 weeks but had to have a doctors note for it. If you've been on BR it's something I would def talk to my dr about before getting it!
  • I got one at 32 weeks and it was pretty good.  I like deep pressure and she wasn't willing to go very deep...

They'll have you lay on your side and give either a body pillow or a knee pillow and a 'hug' pillow so you can get comfortable.  Mine started on my back but just tell them if you're not comfortable with that.

I would DEFINITELY clear it with your doc first since you've been on bed rest, just to be safe.

  • i would make sure that the spa your going to does have a prenatal massage table (the one with the belly part cut out), and also make sure that the person giving you the massage has had lots of exp. with prenatal massage because i've heard that there is a certain point around the ankle that when massaged can trigger contractions. Other than that i would think it would be really relaxing. Actually, i'm kind of hoping that's what my SO got me for my b-day, which is saturday, assuming i haven't had our LO yet!
  • I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow and just had a prenatal massage today. I was very comfortable and came home and took a nap :)
  • I've had 2 prenatal massages at different spas and neither had a table w/ a belly cut out, so I wouldn't count on that.

I also wanted to say, it's good to see you over here, schmoodle Wink

  • I had one today and it was fantastic. I think it's actually better if they don't have a table with a 'belly cut out', b/c you need the support for your stomach - they should have you like on your side and put a pillow between your legs, rather than having you like completely face down. Do make sure the therapist is trained in prenatal massage - the spa I visit has some who are and some who aren't, and would never let one who isn't touch a pregnant woman...
