At 6 months DS#2 weighed 16lb8oz. At 12 months he weighs 16lb10oz. He is now in the 4th percentile for his weight. I can't remember his height but I know he was in the 45th precentile. The doctor has us going back in on 4/30 for a weight check (one month from his last appointment). I'm getting nervous. DS#1 was the exact oposite (at 1 yr was just over 20lbs and weighed 16lbs at 7 months!); granted DS#2 was 2 lbs smaller at birth (6lb12oz).
Some days DS#2 will eat great and almost non stop. Other days (like yesterday) he has no interest in food. He is off of formula (the doctor is aware of this and didn't mention going back on it) and drinks about 16-24oz of whole milk per day. He is off of baby food (he hates being spoon fed) and on table food. Our only diet restrictions are peanut products b/c of his age.
He is in 6-9 month clothes except sleepers which are 9-12 months because of his height. I try feeding him constantly but some days he has no interest. I've tried tons of different foods, some days they work and some they don't. He is also very active! He cruises around the house holding onto things and constantly seems to chase DS#1 around. He's much more active than DS#1 was at this age.
Any thoughts? Obviously I'm going to consult the doctor on 4/30 (2 weeks) but wanted to see if anyone else has been through this.
TIA
Heather

Re: Under 17 lbs at one year????
DD is almost 10 months & weighs 16.8 lbs. Doctor said we'll check it again at her 12 month visit. If she isn't gaining more by than we'll try to figure it out.
Your LO could just be small is all. Sometimes they are.
I think people are kind of missing the point here.
My son weighed 16 pounds at a year. But he didn't also weigh 16 pounds at six months.
I think the docs are right to be concerned that he's only gained 2 oz in 6 months. It's not just that he's small now, but that he's fallen way off his curve. That's a red flag. Meaning, it's worth looking at more closely.
I wouldn't get crazy worried yet, but definitely let them look into what's keeping him from gaining. There are some simple things they can look for that might give you some answers.
GL.
I agree with Sulla here. Not that I'd get yourself worked up over it, because most likely he's fine, but I agree that its the sudden lack of weight gain that's more concerning than the overall size. My DD will no way be 17lbs by 1 (she was 15lbs 12 oz at her 9 month check up) but she was also just barely 13lbs at 6 months. Our pedi was concerned because she was born at the 40th percentile and dropped to below 5th by 4 months. She has stayed consistently 5-7th percentile though, and he is ok with that now. He thinks she was just "bigger" at birth because I had GD, otherwise she would have been a peanut.
He did tell us that if she fell below 3rd percentile we'd have to have some metabolic testing done to be safe. GL and I hope he's just a peanut too!
