XP: International Travel at 30 weeks?

Cross post from 2nd Tri, but since you ladies are already there I thought I would ask you too:

There is a conference coming up in Ireland in June, and I am being offered to have all my expenses paid to go - which is a HUGE, AMAZING opportunity for me as I am new to the field (only one scholarship is being awarded). How would you feel about traveling for one week abroad at 30 weeks along? I would probably pay DH's airfare so he could come with.

Re: XP: International Travel at 30 weeks?

  • Let's just say this...I was nervous to drive up to Minnesota and then South Dakota this past weekend at 33 weeks for the fear that something might happen and my OB was 400 miles away. (DH and I were gone for 5 days.) I don't think I could handle international travel (not physically, but psychologically).

  • Get your doctor's ok first and then go for it!  I wouldn't pass it up as long as my doc was alright with me going!
  • As long as everything was really going well with my pregnancy and my doc/midwife cleared me I would probably go.  I would definitely research the hospitals in the area if god forbid I needed any sort of attention while we were there.
  • I probably wouldn't do it.  I just got back last night from a trip to Virginia/DC to visit my parents.  The flight itself wasn't too uncomfortable, but I had a lot of cramping once we arrived.  I was terrified of going into PTL away from home.  I could only imagine how I would feel if I were in a different country!
  • I spent a week in Germany and Austria at 24 weeks and was fine.  If you feel well, I say why not?  Just pack granola bars for times when you get hungry and aren't near food, and try for an aisle seat on the plane--your doctor will want you to get up and move around a lot to reduce the risk of clots.

    Good luck, have fun.

  • If your doctor says yes, then I'd go for it!  What a cool opportunity.  I flew across the country this past week and I'd just recommend a pillow or something for your back.  Those airplane seats are uncomfortable and my back did not appreciate them at all.  That, and sit on the aisle to allow for many pee/stretching breaks =)

  • Thank you for the input ladies!!! I will be sure to talk to doc first  :)
  • My OB nixed a 90 minute flight to Los Angeles because she said the pressure changes could put my into PTL.  Very sad because I *really* wanted to go.  =(
  • GO! Definitely GO! I went to Mexico at 30 weeks... not quite Ireland, but still out of the US.

I would take this opportunity before it passes you by. Good luck and have fun!
