bleeding diaper rash! help!

Danny's been a little red the past 2 days but nothing major.   He gets this from time to time and it clears up with some Destin.  Well I just changed a poopy diaper and the rash which was mild an hour ago when I changed a wet diaper, is now beet red and bleeding!   When I wiped him, there were a couple areas on his poor little butt that were bleeding a bit.   I started putting Destin on as soon as the reddness started but it's not working!   I want to go to Target, Walmart, CVS, or something to get something else.   What's good for my poor little guy's butt?

Re: bleeding diaper rash! help!

  • We've had this happen w/ DS as well.  I tried all of the diaper rash creams and the one that I think works the best is A&D, but not the creamy kind, the yellow medicated kind.  Also, letting him run around naked for awhile so that his butt can get some air works really well...just make sure to have a towel handy!

  • I use this stuff and it works over night.  best stuff I have tried.  It also has worked over night on bleeding rashes on my daughter.  I found some at longs.

  • I use corolla, it's an animal balm (like udder cream) ~ get it at a farm & tack shop...sounds silly but that with a little powder clears it up immediately (dd has had bleeding rash too)

  • First, stop using wipes and only use a warm washcloth with just water to clean him up. And Desitin burns, as do other diaper pastes, so we were told that good old Vaseline will protect the rash from getting worse and allow it to heal.

    Good luck!

  • don't use the wipes...I would wash the bottom after every diaper change with mild soap and water, and pat dry. Call your pedi and get a prescription for it also. ahhh hope he feels better soon.

  • If I were you, I would call the pediatrician. If it's bleeding, it could be something more than diaper rash.
  • My son has a very very unique problem and that is every time he teethes he has horrendous diarrhea (like 12 times each day)... so bad and we have had this a lot.  I can easily say there is no magic cream.  I do love Mustela Selactiv but it isn't a silver bullet.  We have tried a combo of yeast infection creams, triple paste, A&D, Butt paste, etc. and nothing magically worked either.  We also have used the perscription stuff as well.

For us what we do now is get generic desitin and just cake it on (I'm talking 1/4th of the tube) and we put powder on there after.  This has actually been the most effective.  We also do an hour at a time naked baby time (he wears a baby tee and walks around butt naked).  I think this is the most helpful.  Also we use Aveeno Oatmeal Soak when we do our baths.  HTH!

  • we love flanders over here.  are there red bumps?  could it be a yeast rash instead?  I agree about the naked.  confine him to a room with an easily cleaned floor (kitchen?) and let him feel the breeze :)

  • DD had bleeding diaper rash around Halloween, I called the pedi and got the run around. (Long story for another day). Here's what I learned. Like pp, stop using wipes and use just warm water and a soft cloth (i cut up squares of flannel). I gave her a couple baths a day where she could just sit in warm water - no soap. For diaper cream we used a combo of lotrimin, creamy desitin, and aquaphor. Other combos that worked for us have been just lotrimin and aquaphor, and lotrimin and A&D. I recently heard about vusion, an Rx only cream that can kick this in like a day. We also did frequent diaper changes, even waking her briefly to change her before we went to bed. And, when we could we did diaper free time. Hope your little one gets better soon!
  • Poor guy!  Everyone else had such good advice, so I only have a few things to offer: The less you bathe him, the less dry his skin will get, which'll help.  Also, do you know that you don't need to use wipes for just pee?  DS has luckily never had a bad diaper rash, so I'm not sure if the pee stings or not.  If it does, maybe you still do need to use the wipes.  A bleeding rash would worry me and I'd probably call the pediatrician, but like I said, I haven't really had experience with a diaper rash that bad.  Good luck!
  • DS had this once too and I felt SO bad for him. I agree with the breathing room for his little bottom if you can and also the oatmeal baths do seem to help soothe it. I used Sylvadine cream (we got this as a Rx when he had a burn on his foot) Its a very thick cream and since what he has on his butt is essentially a burn from acidy poop this worked great for us. We used that plus a normal Butt Paste on top. I globbed on as much as I could to try to protect his butt as much as possible. Poor little guy, its heartbreaking when that happens!
  • Add some baking soda to his bath and let him soak in it for about 5 minutes.  Then do a lot of diaper free time before applying any one of the already suggested creams (we did a thin layer of lotramin with thick coating of Desitin purple).

  • Oh your poor little boy!  My daughter has had her share of diaper rashes and the last one was real bad and bleeding like you are describing.  I was at the pharmacy counter to buy some triple paste and the pharmacist told me not to bother and to use the anti-fungals like Lotrimin.  I actually had some nystatin at home that was prescribed to Rylie for a bad diaper rash a while ago and used that.  It literally cleared up overnight!

I hope you find something that works for your son!

thanks for all the suggestions!   Just picked up a couple things at the store so hopefully something works!

It's been a rough week.   He's had a couple almost blowouts that I should have just thrown him in the tub to clean but since he can only have sponge baths until the glue patching his cut on his forehead falls off(ER visit on Easter after he fell and hit his head) We have to keep his head dry and with a kid that loves to splash, that is impossible!

  • ds had this problem last week and we let him have some naked bum time and then we used cornstarch based powder at every diaper change to keep him dry and it was better in a few days.  we tried all kinds of creams but they didn't work for him.
  • rinse out the wipes with warm water before using, soak bottom in warm water as often as you can, it could be a yeast infection ds had one and needed a prescription cream that the pedi nurse just called in for me when i called her, and naked butt
