Secondary IF

Habitual Aborter

So I received my referral to the RE from my OB in the mail yesterday and I see two codes listed on it. Being the curious girl I am, I decided to look them up. The first code was for being an infertile female (oh joy) and the second one was due to being a habiutal aborter. I hate the medical community's use of this word. It makes it sound like I habitually choose to abort my babies. Ugh! I guess that is what I get for looking up codes :(
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

Re: Habitual Aborter

  • OMG! That's a disgusting euphimism!

I thought it was bad when they kept referring to my m/c 's as SABs. (spontaneous abortions) I hate even typing it out. I finally had to ask the doc to stop using that term because it made me uncomfortable.

So sorry you had to see that.

  • Yeah, I don't look at the codes for that very reason. I wish they could just medically used the term miscarriage, and save abortion for when it is truly a choice that has been made, rather than something that naturally happens.
  • Exactly! I feel like an abortion is a choice and I never chose to lose three babies :( Stupid medical community!! I am glad I am not the only one who finds this wording disturbing.

  • I know it doesn't mean it is your choice and nor is the doctor implying that!  But it does sound like a that a little w/a code term like that.
