Painting a mural

This isn't really a nursery question, but a playroom question.  We just finished our basement and our making a play area for DS down there.  I want to paint a mural on one of the walls...it's going to be jungle animals.  Has anyone painted a mural anywhere?  If so what type of paint did you use? I don't want to just use regular wall paint because that's too expensive, and I need something that I can mix pretty easily to make different colors, because there are a lot of different ones in my mural.  Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Painting a mural

  • Have you tried buying wall paint samples? I was at Home Depot yesterday and they had little jars of paint you could color whatever color you wanted for $4 each. You are going to need a lot of paint and $4 each is not a bad deal.
You can mix every color from red, yellow, blue, black and white. Sometimes it's easier to buy a green too though so you don't have to mix green, it's a pretty common color to need. To lighten a color, always add the color to the white or you will use an entire can of white to lighten your paint. Then buy some plastic disposable bowls for mixing and make sure you get some good brushes. Don't use the crappy ones from the hardware store. But I would suggest using wall paint for your mural because the cheap acrylic paints at Michael's and other stores will not give you the nice color range and the expensive ones will cost A LOT to get enough for a wall mural.

  • You could also do vinyl wall decals instead of painting a mural.  I know etsy does some custom ones, but I am sure there are many options if you google it too.
  • When I was little my Grandma painted bunches of flowers on a wall in my bedroom.  She just used the oil paints she had at her house.  They looked great!

  • I was hired to do one on a huge wall in a kids bedroom. It was a jungle theme. I drew the whole mural on the wall first with white chalk that way, if I didn't like something, it was easy to erase! I used Liquitex acrylics that I mixed with a gloss medium- it allows for better mixing between colors (I used it for the different browns and greens in the trees) and extends your drying time. Acrylics dry relatively quick. As a base, I did buy a gallon of Behr paint in my background color to help seal the wall. If your wall isn't too large, you may be able to get away with a quart. I have tons of tricks & tips. Let me know if you have any questions!!! GL!!
