CD12: Low E2, but several large follies - what gives?

So, I just got the call from my RE about my E2 levels... only 172.  They have actually gone down since Thursday which is a surprise.  Based on the number and size of follies we saw this morning (I don't recall the exact sizes but there was at least one at an 18 and several close behind) my E2 should have been more like 1000+.

Anyone else have this happen to them?  Low E2 even though they saw several large follies?  What did your RE say?  What did you do?

We've been 'unexplained' this whole time.  Maybe this will help lead to a diagnosis?  Has anyone else had this situation and been diagnosed with something specific?

Re: CD12: Low E2, but several large follies - what gives?

  • For my first IVF cycle on the day of my trigger shot my E2 was only 502 and there were many measurable follicles- they ended up retrieving 15 eggs and 14 of them were mature.  I don't know how that happened with E2 being only 502, but I guess it is possible!

Did your RE have any insight?  (Oh, and we are officially unexplained, but it's possible I have a luteal phase defect).

  • Hi Kiki - thanks for your reply.  And especially thanks for sharing your numbers. That does make me feel better.   14 mature eggs at only a 502.  I suppose I could have more than 1 than at less than 200.

No, the RE didn't have much insight.  She said that she figures the other follicles just aren't actually producing an egg.

Regardless, we went in for an IUI this morning and will go again tomorrow morning.  Crossing fingers big time on this cycle because if not, we're looking at IVF.
