Often DS will look at me and smack the sides of his head with both hands- hard! I try to ignore it because when I tell him "no no" he just keeps doing it.
DD did this for awhile also. It was probably a result of my mother saying "oh my" and smacking her face a la "home alone". She sometimes rams her head into the wall and then tries it again. I can't say for sure it is normal but I think they just try stuff out.
DS use to do this a lot when he was nursing but has stopped for the most part. I did some reading on it and it seems to be a calming/self-soothing mechanism for them in some instances.
If you think it's excessive, call your doctor and they'll probably ease your mind.
My 14 month old son has been doing this for awhile now he'll hits himself in the head (hard sometimes) and laughs about it. He started doing it about 2 months ago, every time I told him not to do that he'd just keeping doing it. My friend told me it's just a phase that her son did the same thing and just ignore him. That's what I do now, turn around and don't look at him, he'll stop. My son stopped doing it all together for about a month then just recently started doing it again, so I just ignore him and he stops. I'm sure he'll stop for good eventually, I think they do it to see what kind of reaction they get from us.
