Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

He hits himself in the head...a lot.

Often DS will look at me and smack the sides of his head with both hands- hard! I try to ignore it because when I tell him "no no" he just keeps doing it.

Anyone else have this?

  • DD did this for awhile also.  It was probably a result of my mother saying "oh my" and smacking her face a la "home alone".  She sometimes rams her head into the wall and then tries it again.  I can't say for sure it is normal but I think they just try stuff out.

  • He does the head ramming too...and laughs.
  • DD just started doing this if she has a temper tantrum. She hit herself a few times.
  • DS use to do this a lot when he was nursing but has stopped for the most part.  I did some reading on it and it seems to be a calming/self-soothing mechanism for them in some instances.

If you think it's excessive, call your doctor and they'll probably ease your mind.

  • My 14 month old son has been doing this for awhile now he'll hits himself in the head (hard sometimes) and laughs about it. He started doing it about 2 months ago, every time I told him not to do that he'd just keeping doing it. My friend told me it's just a phase that her son did the same thing and just ignore him. That's what I do now, turn around and don't look at him, he'll stop. My son stopped doing it all together for about a month then just recently started doing it again, so I just ignore him and he stops. I'm sure he'll stop for good eventually, I think they do it to see what kind of reaction they get from us.
