DS who is EBF right now starting having the smelly frothy green poos a few days ago. I read that this is because he is getting too much foremilk. So today I started block nursing - only nursing off of one boob for a 3 hour block. I haven't seen much difference yet in the stools.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you know how long it takes to resolve? Any other advice?
Re: foremilk/hindmilk imbalance
I have this fantastic book called Up the Duff which is sold in the US as A Bun in the Oven (twee title but ok, I realise the Aussie title would not make sense over there).
Anyway - green poo is not unusual or anything to worry about really. REALLY. Stop worrying about foremilk and hindmilk. If you're not truncating nursing sessions before the child is finished they're doing fine. They don't need all forms of the milk every single feed. Its all fine.
Sorry but you are so overthinking this. Just relax.
I don't often get to say that. People say I'm uptight :-)
(tried posting...not sure if it went thru...sorry if this shows up twice)
I think your plan to try block feeding is a good one. I have gotten the same info (green frothy poop indicates baby is getting too much foremilk, not enough hindmilk) at LLL meetings so I am less inclined to believe the PP's assertion that this is a myth.
I would think it would take a few days to show a difference, but I don't have personal experience. I don't think you are "overthinking" it. I think you're doing fine.
If there is no change in a week or two you could look into food intolerances and maybe try taking some common offenders out of your diet (e.g., dairy).
Happy nursing!
