Breastfeeding

Please help! Decreased supply one side

I started pumping right away b/c of some issues my son had after birth. Once my milk came in I immediately noticed my left breast produced more milk when pumping. However, my right breast was still producing a pretty good amount. Over the past 2 days the right side has started lagging even more; I'm lucky to get 0.5 oz from it now. I nurse more than I pump but I do pump 3X a day or so. When I nurse I give him both breasts so I can't tell if he's satisfied from what he's getting from the right one. He seems to be drinking, swallowing, etc when he nurses on that side. I try to switch sides that I start on each time that I nurse. The right breast does not hurt or have any redness in it.

Any thoughts? Just today I started pumping extra on the right side only along with massage. Has this happened to anybody else? what did you do? I am terrified it's going to continue to decline. Thanks!

  • I do remember that happening to me. I would pump more, like you said you were going to do, on the slow side. The more the breast is empty, so to speak, the breast will want to produce more. Keep that side just as active as the left and it will even out.

Keep up on lots of water and a nice hot shower before feeding time to help with the let down of the milk. Don't freak out.......you body know what to do :)

  • Don't worry. I have always had about 3x as much milk on my left than my right. Just think of twins! Even if your one side dries up completely you can still EBF as long as you want. Trust your body. Pump, rest, and drink water.
