Cloth Diapering Help

I am interested in switching to cloth diapering for my twins but I am so overwhelmed at the choices out there and don't want to waste $ on something that won't work well.

What is the best ones out there?  How many shoud I buy for twins?

Are there any good websites you can rec. so I can do some more research on all the ins and outs?

Thanks so much!

Re: Cloth Diapering Help

  • I'm in the process of switching too, so I don't have any experience for you. I know there's a website that offers a sample pack of several different types (I think it might be jillians drawer or something similar). Some ladies on here have very helpful blogs and bios.

I decided just to order one of everything I'm interested in and see what works best for us. Here is what I ordered:

    BumGenius 3.0

    Goodmama

    B4 (bububebe)

    Kissaluv prefit and contours

    Indian Prefolds

    Thirsties covers and prefit

    Snappi (holds prefold diapers together)

    wool cover

    Here are some basic differences:

All in one: Has an absorbent inner layer and a water repellent outer layer, so you wash the entire diaper after each use. No diaper cover necessary. Ex: BumGenius

Prefold: what you traditionally think of when you think cloth diaper. Requires a diaper cover and some sort of snap or pin.

Prefit: The entire diaper is absorbent. It's already sewn with elastic around the edges and snaps in place. So it fits like a disposable, but it requires a diaper cover. Ex: Goodmama, Kissaluv, B4, Thirsties, Blueberry, etc.

Pocket:  This diaper does not require a cover. You stuff it with a prefold or a disposable liner, and change the liner each time. Ex: Gdiaper

You do not have to change the diaper cover each time the diaper is changed. Many people on here use wool diaper covers, also called soakers. These can be bought on etsy.com. I received a recommendation for Thirsties diaper covers, so I am trying that one.

  • Do you have a local store that sells cloth diapers? Sometimes it helps to see them in person. I ended up buying one pocket diaper (BumGenius 3.0), one prefold/cover, and one fitted (I got a Cuddlebuns but there are tons of others girls use here) with a cover. I tried all three options and preferred the BumGenius (pockets). I personally wasn't interested in AIO's b/c of the extra drying time. I then invested in 12 pockets and kept the fitted and prefold with covers for backup/laundry days. I do laundry every other morning and hang to dry (I live in AZ so it's pretty quick). I would do laundry every other day regardless of how many I have so I can keep the loads small and manageable and stink, etc. I preferred pockets for their trimness and ease of use.

  • Moderndiapers.com and cottonbabies.com are 2 websites that I used when researching and purchasing.  I like Bumgenius, prefolds and Thirsties covers the best.  Like the pp said, try out a few and decide what you like before buying a lot.  Look for some used on the swapspot too.
  • I think you should try the Cloth Diaper Trial program to see what kind of diaper you like and then go from there to research brands within that type: https://www.jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10/tryclothfor10

By type I mean: prefold, pocket, fitted, all-in-one, etc. etc. So narrow that down first and then you can research the particular brands. Just my opinion.

For ease, I started with pockets (bumGenius 3.0 one size) and then branched out from there. But the trial seems like a good idea.
