Baby Names

What do you think of Isla and Luca?

I really like girls names that end in -la like Ella, Gabriella etc.

Isla is pronounced eye-la and it is Gaelic and it means from the island..

Having a hard time thing of middle names to go with it. My middle name is Jane, which is a big time family name. My hubby seems intent on using Marie for the middle name.

For a boy we were thinking Luca Alexander. Luca is Latin and it means surrounded by light.

Out last name is two syllables and it beings with C. It is a spanish name.

Brutal honesty always appreciated ladies! I want to hear what my friends won't tell me!

  • I like them both.

  • I like Isla. It's come up several times on this board and I *think* the general consensus is that it's pretty but will be mispronounced often. I, for one, know how to pronounce it as a girl name but I also think of the spanish word and sometimes think "eesla" first when I see it.

Luca is ok. I like Lucas more. Love Alexander.

  • i love that you did homework. when it comes to baby names, not enough people do. Yes

i think isla is a lovely name, but i would say i've seen it on these boards about a dozen times recently. becoming tooo popular for my taste. but jane and marie would both be fine middle names, i think.

luca is also great. it always puts the suzanne vega song 'luka' in my head, but still... there are worse things, right?

  • i really like Luca - not too sure of LucA Alexander - a-a, but it depends on how oftern you'll actually say the 2 names together.

I like Isla, but I think it will be mispronounced and misspelled. I prefer Isla Jane to Isla Marie. Never been a fan of Marie - and it doesn't really "go" with Isla.?

  • Cute, but definitely nms. I think Isla is kinda trendy on the bump, but I have never heard it here IRL.

  • I love Isla.?

I like Luca too, it will always remind me of Dr. Kovac from ER, though, but he was good looking so that's ok :-)?

A lot of people don't know how to pronounce Isla so that will probably be annoying to her. Luca is nms. It sounds feminine. ?
  • Thanks girls. So so so helpful. Brings up issues I would have never thought about myself. I think you might be right about Isla being a little too trendy. A friend of mine suggested it to me and it just grew on me.

Oh well I have 6 months to find the perfect names. I am taking it very seriously!!! I really want to do a good job!

  • I don't really care for Isla. I'd be more inclined to choose another name that ended in "LA".  I just don't see anything overly beautiful about its meaning either.  I think its popularity is stemming from that movie actress Isla Fisher (shopaholic) and that's really about it.

As for Luca, I think it comes off as feminine and it reminds me of that song Luka (about child abuse by Suzanne Vega). Lucas or Luke just seem more masculine.  You could go very Jennie Garth and name your kid something like Lucabella (I think that is her daughters name)  thus satifying you love of both names (of course would only work for a girl....)

I LOVE Isla, I actually didn't know it was so popular on the Bump! But I did get it from the actress Isla Fischer, I'm not sure if I'd even pay attention to it otherwise.

I also love all names ending with "la" - Ella is my top choice (though WAY too popular, too), and I love Gabriela and Lila, too.

Luca is really cool, but I agree with another poster that it's sort of feminine sounding.

  • I really like Isla.  We have it on our top 5 list for girls.  I think it would get mispronounced less than everyone else does, but maybe that's just me.  I mean, it looks just like "island" with the last two letters chopped off.  Hopefully people can figure it out.  I think it's beautiful and not common at all.  The only person I have heard of actually having the name is Isla Fisher, who I think is adorable.

Luca is cute.  I don't think it's super masculine, but maybe just because it's kind of new to me.  It sounds more like a girl's name to me, perhaps because it ends with an "a?"  It might be kind of weird for a teenage boy...or I might be totally overthinking it.

"Isla" is also spanish for island... and personally I dont like it.. I'll go for other names ending in LA

    Luca Alexander is adorable..

  • That is really weird...see my siggy below lol.
  • I love Luca Alexander, we were considering Luca till DH discovered my secret crush on Luca from ER. hehe- we are going with Liam Alexander now- no crush on Liam Neeson I swear. Smile

I really like Isla and think Isla Marie flows really well and sounds angelic.

  • Isla is one of my favorite names but DH hates it and I also love Luca.

  • I love Isla. I like Luca a lot, but I never think it sounds right for the last letter of the first name to be the same as the first letter of the mn. The A's are a little awkward to say together in my opinion.
  • I like Isla, but not Luca.
  • I think they are both adorable.  I would agree with pp that Isla would be mispronounced, though.
  • I know a girl named Luca. She's adorable but ?I associate it with a girls name.

I think people like the idea of Isla but it's a rare few who have the cajones to actually name their child that. ?

  • I like Luca a lot. ?I think that Isla is trendy but it would be pretty with a Spanish last name. ?What about Luca for a girl? ?I think it is cute for either gender.

?I love the name Paloma, even though it doesn't end in -la it does end in -a!

I also like Lila, Selah (see-lah), Cecilia, Celia.?

  • I love them both.

I'm so glad you are considering Luca for a boy - it's gorgeous, and also does make me think of the hot doctor on ER. ?;)

Isla is a form of Islay, the name of a specific island off the Scottish mainland (Islay itself is also pronounced EYE-la). ?My Scottish ancestors are actually from there, so Isla has been on my list for some time. ?I would also be a bit scared it would be mispronounced, but I think it depends where you live, especially if there is a large Spanish-speaking population (EES-la). ?I think it makes a lot of people's shortlists, but often gets vetoed in the end because of this.

    Fabulous choices though.?
