Bad to have a baby sitting up?

My 11 week old loves to sit up.  Like, if you are playing with her and try to lay her down, she will cry.  She also likes to stand up on my legs with me holding her torso... she's pretty strong.

My SIL said that someone was telling her it's bad for a baby's back to sit up too much.  Has anyone ever heard this?  I have never heard this before, and wondered if it's true.

  • Hmmm I've never heard that before.  DD liked to "stand" early like that too, and still likes it.  She never really liked to be held in the cradle position because I think she liked to see what was happening around her.  Things change, though: she used to hate being on her tummy and starting around 5 months she sleeps much better on her tummy.

Cute pic btw!  I still can't figure out how to do a signature picture :(

  • I think it's OWT, if your DD was hurt/uncomfortable standing/sitting, she'd let you know. Mine loves it too
  • i have no idea, but i can't imagine Bumbo chairs would be so insanely popular if it were bad for a baby to sit up .

  • No.  DS loved to stand and sit as well when he was a newborn.  He was tripod sitting by 3 months, and sitting unassisted by 4.5 months!  I think all it does is help with muscle development.
  • People say the damndest things... I can't imagine that sitting up could harm the baby.

  • Many of my family members have told me the same thing...that it is bad to let babies sit and stand at such a young age. My DD loved to stand and sit up when she was around 2 months old so I let her.

This was coming from the same women who told me to feed my baby honey when she had thrush!

  • it's only bad because you end up like me, with an 8 month old that is about to walk at any minute.  seriously, little man loved to stand when he was tiny.  he now stands and walks along the table, he can even do it one handed sometimes.  i think it is fine for them to stand and sit.  little man was also sitting up early as well.
