We had to bring DD to the pediatric dentist at 19 mos. for a chipped tooth. It really wasn't that traumatic. She cried a little, but they are so good at dealing with kids that it was fast. They use great wording, too - "I'm going to tickle your teeth" and stuff like that. They had me holding her while they leaned her body back onto the dentist's lap and he quickly checked her mouth. And DD liked getting a new toothbrush and stickers.
Good luck!

Is she going to a pediatric dentist? My DD has always been fine with the dentist but she's been going since she was 12 months. I second the other poster. Now at 2.5 she sits in the big chair but before this past visit she would sit in my lap and then put her head on the hygenists lap. Stickers and little toys help!
