BF and pumping

I have been EBF - LO is nursing every 2.5-3 hours on both breasts - about 15 minutes each breast - no problems.  I decided to try pumping, so DH can give her a bottle and I can spend more time with my other two. I can not get any more than 1oz, total from both breasts.  Any thoughts?  Should I just forget pumping?

Re: BF and pumping

  • It takes a while for some women to respond to a pump.  Keep pumping-- it's still very early in your daughter's life.  Your supply will continue to increase.

Try these things while pumping- wait and pump 1 hour after she's done eating.  Also, try massage/compression.  Here's a video:  https://newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html

There's a lot of helpful information on that site.  Good luck!!!

  • I was never a very successful pumper, even when I was working full time and taking a supplement the most I ever could pump in a 24hr period was 18oz. Your LO is still very young, and honestly, I wouldn't even introduce a bottle yet. I would suggest waiting a few more weeks and then trying again, plus, at that time, you might have more of a supply to respond to the pump.
