Reaction to egg whites?

K is just a few weeks shy of his 1st b-day so I went ahead and gave my mom the okay on Easter to give him some scrambled eggs with egg whites included.  About an hour later I noticed his cheeks were really, really flushed, and later that afternoon it looked like he had some mild hives on his tummy.  It wasn't a severe reaction, but I'm worried this was from the egg whites.  Anyone have any experience/insight?

Re: Reaction to egg whites?

  • Sounds like an egg allergy to me...

  • My son isn't allergic but b/c I have a history of allergies my pedi ran an allergy screen on me.  One thing included is eggs.  You might want to have it ran... it sure does sound like a reaction Sad

  • Thanks.  I will def. have the pedi look further into it.  Funny thing is he's had stuff with eggs in it before (like cake) and I never noticed a reaction, but now I'm afraid to give him anything that could have them in it.  Is it one of those reactions that gets worse the second time around?
  • Eeek.  Just read more of that WebMd link.  Looks like it can get a lot worse with exposure. Shittt.
  • My son is allergic to eggs and we know it from when he had allergy testing at around 5 months old. He just had another test done and unfortunately he is still allergic to them.

I'd have him tested. It's a blood test so it is fairly painless.

Also, odds are he might have already had egg in his Stage 3 foods if you have fed him Chicken and Noodle or Lasagna, etc. I was shocked to see how many Stage 3's had egg in them when we moved into the 3's.

Also, if you go to the allergist and stuff you can request an epi pen prescription just in case you need it. I have one just in case.

  • I am sure he's had so much with eggs in it - pasta, waffles, cake, cookies.
  • Sounds like an allergy to me too. DS has an extremely severe peanut allergy (he cannot even be touched my someone who has recently touched anything with peanuts) and we have to keep an epi pen with us at all times.?
  • It sounds like an egg allergy to me. My DS is allergic to eggs and we found out through an accidental exposure at 7mths. He had another accidental exposure at 8mths and it was much, much worse. We spoke to our pedi at his 9mth appt and then saw an allergist. The allergist did a prick test on his arm and tested for a few other things as well. We now have an epi pen and he will be getting further allergy testing done in August and it will be a blood draw. He's had a mild reaction so some food preservatives so for now I try to give him mostly fresh and organic foods to avoid these issues.

Anyway, my point is just that you should call the pedi and have him tested just in case.?

  • He might have a mild allergy or maybe sensitive.  My son has a severe egg white allergy and his reactions land us in the hospital.  Good news is most kids outgrow egg allergies by the age of 3.  Has he had anything with egg in it before?
