baby road trips = suck

Ugh. ?I've always loved a road trip, but after our first long drive with DS...not so much. ?He flies like a champ, but 3 hours in his carseat was just too much to handle- I thought he'd do well since he loves his new big boy seat and never cries in there when we're out and about. ?I guess 2 hours is his max! ?On the way to Houston he started crying about 45 minutes from ILs and pretty much didn't stop until we got there. ?I thought we were super smart by driving late at night when he'd sleep....yeah, nothing like being tired and having a wailing baby at midnight. ?Today, same deal! ?Got as far as Bastrop and he lost his marbles. ?Seriously NOT fun. ?DH was in the back seat with puffs, bottles, toys, the dog....nothing pacified the kid.

:( ?Boo. ?I guess we're limited to air travel for awhile longer. ?Anyone have any outstanding tips for car travel with baby??

Re: baby road trips = suck

  • I don't know...but I'm making a two-day trip to Detroit this summer with both kids.  Should be a blast :)

  • I'm so sorry!! That stinks. I have a 5 hour trip to see my parents (6-7 if DD is along!) The only thing that consistently works for us is "kiddie" music and stopping to stretch, snack, etc. I've been taking her on long car trips every month or two since she was 2 months old, so she's used to it now. That doesn't mean that she doesn't still have rough trips every now and then, though. They just don't understand why they're stuck in the car!

If they won't sleep, we stop every hour to get out and stretch, eat, change diapers, etc.  We made a trip to Port A when DD was almost 1ish and there was no way she was going to sit there peacefully no matter how much we tried to entertain her.

    I'm sorry it didn't go well :(

  • My DS is the exact same!  We went to the IL's farm for the weekend, which is between Brenham and Houston, about 2.5 hours (3 with stops) and the last 30 minutes of each way he went ballistic.  On the way home we stopped to change his diaper and I took him for a little walk around and showed him a waterfall (we stopped in the parking lot of some pool/hot tub sales place so it was a display waterfall) and he enjoyed that.  That pretty much solved it for the rest of the trip.

We're driving to Florida in August - he'll be 13 months.  Not sure how that's going to go, other than we'll probably have to spend 2 nights on the road on the way there & back, instead of the typical 1 night we usually spend!  Plus, I'm hoping that he'll be big enough to be forward facing by then, because I know that would keep him occupied (that and Baby Einstein on the portable DVD player...)  I really am starting to dread it and even joked w/DH the other day about sending me and Logan on a plane, and letting him drive with all our fishing gear!
