If you've breastfed more than one baby...

Are your nipples sore in the beginning each time? Ben was bottle-fed but Emily was EBF for 13 months, so I wondered if I'll have that initial soreness in the beginning again when I nurse the new baby? Or, will they still be toughened up enough from the last baby. What was your experience?

  • They were sore for me with both of them. I had nursed Ry until she was 18 months old.

  • Mine were sore, but not nearly as painful as with #1.  I used nipple cream for the first week or so and then they were fine.  And I had no bleeding or chapping like I had with #1.
  • sore for both but the cramps with the 2nd were a million times worse (only lasts a week or two, but still!)

It was worse w/ #2 for me. Soreness, cracked, bleeding, which I didn'thave with DD#1

    Good luck!

  • I didn't with DD after BF DS for 13 months.  No cracking, no pain, no bleeding...  I'm sure some of depends on the baby, but both mine have been pretty good nursers (good latch, etc).  HTH!
  • I EBF both my girls.  I had actually just finished BF DD#1 about 8 months before I had DD#2.  My nipples were still sore and everything with DD#2, but not for nearly as long.  It hurt for less than two weeks, maybe less than a week.  Much shorter than they hurt with DD#1.

Ditto all of this and I used Soothies.  The second time around was so much easier.

  • sore, but not as bad... and it did not last as long either.

    Really bad cramps with #2.

  • #1, I exclusively pumped, #2 BF for 13 months, this time around my nipples were sore, but not nearly as bad as they were the first two times. I didn't have to use lansinoh cream nearly as long as I did w/ #2. I think I only used it for 2-3 weeks this time.
  • I hurt for 6 weeks with #1.  With #2, I can honestly say I never had any pain at all.  I was expecting it, but he's been a breeze to nurse.

Cramps were much worse with #2, but they only lasted 3-4 days.  I'm not sure what the norm is there.

  • I had the same amount of soreness (a lot) both times at the beginning. BF itself was much easier to get the hang of the 2nd time around though.
  • Urrgh! I forgot about the increasingly painful after-pains. They barely hurt with Ben, but holy shiit! At least i'll be on some good meds after my c-section;)

No soreness with #1.  Very sore with #2 for a week or two.  Hope you don't have to deal with it this time around!
  • Mine were all three times in the beginning.
  • I was actually more sore and in pain with DS than I was with DD.  He was just like a little baby barracuda though...so maybe that had something to do with it.

Sorry but ditto this.  I had a horrible few weeks with DS.  I literally would struggle to let him latch on the right side for like 10 minutes.  I just COULD not do it because it hurt so bad.  Of course, then he'd get frustrated and cry.  And I would cry too.  Once that cleared up though, I've had no issues.  I was a bit bummed; I thought after #1 I wasn't supposed to have issues!!

  • Yes but I knew it was going to hurt to it was more bearable because I knew it would get better.

  • Mine were more sore with #2, but then we also developed thrush at about week 3.
