So I've been reading some baby books (Baby Whisperer and Happiest Baby on the Block) and from what I gather, the Baby Whisperer advocates putting your LO on a schedule/in a routine from day 1, but I'm wondering how feasible this really is. I imagine that DH and I are going to be a little too sleep deprived and overwhelmed to worry about whether or not we're keeping DS on a routine. If you used a routine, do you mind sharing it and when you started getting LO into it?
Happiest Baby on the Block related question-did you swaddle just at night or during naps and/or other times during the day as well?
Thanks!
Re: Routine/Schedule for newborn?
I feed/nap on demand with Kelsey. THe only thing that is routine with her is on nights we give her a bath it is at the same time. Kelsey developed her own routine after a few weeks, and started eating her last bottle at 8 and going to bed for the evening after that, and now she STTN (since 7 weeks). I let my first daughter develop her own routine and it worked well then too.
I hated Baby Whisperer, luv, hated it.
We swaddle for sleep. I only swaddled DS a couple times otherwise, but he wasn't a very fussy newborn. I would only swaddle during non-sleep times if your baby is very fussy and can't be calmed down.
Well, our LO spent 13 days in the NICU so she had a schedule forced on her, which we have kept up since bringing her home.
She is swaddled every time she sleeps. We use the kiddopottamus one, which is great. She is a little houdini if we use regular blankets. The velcro on the kiddopottamus keps her put. I love it!
my schedule is feed the baby when he is hungry!!
We did not start DD on a routine/schedule until she was 4 mo and she pretty much started it on her own. When she was around 2 mo we knew she needed a nap once she was awake for more then 1.5 hr so her "schedule" was eat, play, nap.
we didnt swaddle after the hospital because neither of my kiddos liked it. DD loved to be held like a football facing outwards- it was the only way we could get her to sleep for months!!
the best advice i can give is to sleep as much as you can and do not worry about a routine!! it will fall into place!
