Day #5 of cold = misery

(see here for back story / original post)

Long story short, my GP confirmed late last week that this is "just a cold" and NOT to take the antibiotics Seeker's office had prescribed over the phone. I tried to manage through the weekend with tylenol cold & sinus and throat lozenges, but I stopped responding to those around Saturday night. My throat pain just kept getting worse, and I stopped sleeping for more than 2-hour stretches.

Last night DH and I stumbled to the store around 2 a.m. for something that would help my throat (I was dreaming about throat pain it was so constant and bad). I got Tylenol cough and sore throat liquid, which did help the sore throat, but didn't do a thing for the congestion/drainage that the pills had been keeping at bay, so overall I actually ended up feeling worse, albeit in less pain.

I called in sick to work today (I NEVER call in sick). DH is supposed to leave for Europe on Friday and he's threatening to call the trip off if I'm not better. I'm supposed to have a girl's weekend with my mom that I've been looking forward to for months.

I have another appt. w/ GP this afternoon. I'm hoping she'll say that at this point, taking the antibiotics will fix things, b/c this "wallowing through the cold" business is for the birds. Five days is too freaking long to be out of commission.

Oh, and I've lost my voice from all the hacking and sh!t in my throat.

And I feel guilty for taking all these medications, even if they are on the approved list.

Wah. Sad

Dear Bump: You suck.

Re: Day #5 of cold = misery

  • I was thinking about you this morning, and was going to email ya to check in!?

I'm so sorry you're still feeling miserable!!

Is the the drainage just post-nasal or are you stuffy/runny as well? If you're stuffy or runny, you could try a Neti Pot (ick). Humidifer? Sleep with your head elevated more??I've heard a teaspoon oh honey before bed helps coat your throat and alleviate some pain... what else? Gargling warm salt water (ick, again).

That's all I can think of as far as med-free remedies.

And please rssn, you're feeling bad enough already without beating yourself up over guilt. Alina is just fine in there, you need to take care of you - so if the approved meds help, take em and know that Alina needs a happy, healthy mommy (not one thats stressing about the meds).?

    Hope you feel better soon!!!!?

  • My doc allows sudafed, and in fact the nurse lectured me about taking it consistently when I said I was only taking it at night since I wanted to minimize taking any meds.  I keep a glass of milk by the bed at night because if I wake up with a bad sore throat in the middle of the night I find the milk soothing.  Also, a humidifier should help with the sore throat at night, elevate your head and make sure you aren't sleeping with a fan blowing on you.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • Ugh, not fun!  I hope you feel better soon!!!!!  Get some rest!

  • I feel your pain!  I was sick ALL week last week with what sounds like the same thing - UGH!  You sound like you have it worse than me, though - my sore throat only lasted 2 days, then I was just stuffed up and draining and feeling like poo for the rest of the week/weekend. :(

Definitely try a Netti pot.  I think that's the one thing that kept me from going bad to worse.   And don't worry about your little girl, she's fine!!

  • Sorry you are sick. Sad I hope you feel better soon!
  • I'm so sorry that you're feeling so miserable. I had a similar sounding cold a few months ago, so I can sympathize. You can take Sudafed to help with the congestion/stuffiness. I hope you feel better soon.

  • Aaww honey, I'm so sorry.  Earlier this year I my allergies turned into a nasty sinus infection and it just plain sucked.  I ended up having to take a Z-pack to get better, and Luke is just fine.  So don't worry about having to take stuff that your doc prescribes.  Your DD will still be perfect when she arrives!
