Breastfeeding

Baby thrashes and gets mad while at the breast.

My baby thrashes around and fights while he is at the breast. I am pretty sure its because of an overactive letdown, bc sometimes when he pulls off I am spraying everywhere. Is there anything that I can do for this and will it ever get better?Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!!

  • ugh that was our problem too.

lie ALL THE WAY back when you BF.

use gravity to your advantage. think about it. if you are lying all the way, say recline in a chair- and your LO is on you, gravity has to work against your milk, and slow it down a little.

also try lying down and BFing.

    search 'alternative nursiing positions'-

or nursing with overactive letdown in google for alternative positions.

  • Also make sure to burp frequently because all that chugging can give them bubbles in the tummy.
  • you can also unlatch your LO and then let your milk spray into a burp cloth or towel and then relatch...that's what I had to do in the beginning until DD could handle the flow better.

Ditto pp about leaning back and burping often too - definitely burp often, especially if your LO is already a gassy baby - my DD is.

bookmark kellymom.com too. it's an awesome site for BFing.

  • I also have a strong let down, but usually when my son is acting like that it's a stuck burp or he's uncomfortable working on gas. Early on, like when I was engorged in the first week, he would react to the let down by almost choking. If the problem is indeed your letdown, you could pump for a minute or so before feeding him. Sometimes I have to do this if I'm really full and he's having a hard time grabbing on (at which time he sometimes fights with the boob).

  • Hi, silly question to all you advanced BF's but what is "letting down"? I am PG with our first child and want very much to BF, this board is answering a lot of question. TIA

It's when your milk starts to flow...sometimes you can feel it, too. I started feeling it last week because it's a little painful for me when he starts nursing and the other side lets down.

You'll find that one side might "let down" while nursing or pumping the other side and you may leak.
