Hello fellow expecting ladies (and compassionate gentlemen seeking information for thier expecting ladies - thank you)!
I want to give comfort to those ladies craving the naughty - can't have it cuz you're pregnant - BEER!!
Okay, so right around 12/13 weeks I went crazy craving beer. Sure, I drank beer once in a while before I was pregnant, but this craving was in a league of it's own. I've never craved beer like this in my life.
My husband and I decided we'd wait the few days for the appointment with the doctor and get their official opinion on NON-ALCOHOLIC beer (I wouldn't drink the regular stuff - that's IS dangerous).
The thing is, even the non-alcoholic stuff contains .5% by volume. Whoops! Is this bad?! Read on.
The day before the appointment, my craving was so intense, my husband caught me in the beer isle at the grocery store, O'Douls beer in hand. He BARELY managed to convince me to wait 24 hours.
The next day, the doc's official answer: "Officially, I cannot condone alcohol in any amount during pregnancy." Then, she looked me square in the face and said, "....just go ahead. It's not going to hurt you or the baby." Just don't bing on it. It's not good to bing on anything, period, but even .5% by volume beers can start to add up.
I bought the beer. I drank the beer. I had two even! I haven't craved one since. But they were the best beers I've ever had (even if it was O'Douls).
Moderation in everything is key. But the kernal of knowledge here is:
All you ladies dying for a beer, go for it (after checking with your OB/GYN). Just keep it non-alcoholic and drink in moderation. Enjoy!!
Re: Craving Beer? Me too!
Good for you
I've been dying for some champagne. My OB is okay with a half of glass in the third tri, but DH says no way :P Although he's being really sweet and has been teetotaling right along with me, I am def asking for a bottle of Pierrer-Jouet as my "push present" lol
Cheers! ?I certainly plan on indulging in a *little* bit of NON-alcoholic beer, maybe even tonight when I go watch the basketball game.
?
And I want a big cold bottle of champagne at the hospital for after birth to toast my baby into this world
?
i went through the same thing, especially from sept-jan (football season) it was torture. all i wanted was an ice cold beer in a frosted mug at my favorite local bar while watching the eagles game (keep opinions to yourself of my team, and ill keep them to myself about yours!
) so about 2 months ago, one day after work i gave in and said im going to have an o'douls. well after the first sip the one guy i work with said 'well you do know there is still alcohol in that, right?' well after i saw the .5% alc by volume that beer quickly became very unenjoyable.. i dumped it all down the drain! i know it was all in my head but i did try to give into my want and i just couldnt do it! but i will tell you this, as soon as i can, im going to sit down and enjoy an ice cold one!
Okay, I think I was fairly clear that anyone considering having a NON-ALCOHOLIC beer, needed to clear it with their doctor first. You can cringe, but when it's your turn and you get a craving for anything, be it pickles, strawberries, or beer, you'd be amazed how strong that craving is.
I'm not implying that I love beer so much that I just couldn't do without it. In fact, I rarely drink at all, ever. So when I craved beer, I was caught really off guard. I put if off for some time, trying to get over it. I was waking up in the middle of the night, dying for a beer. That was no abnormal for me that it freaked me out.
I cleared my non-alcoholic beer with my doctor BEFORE I drank it. When the time comes for you, if you're like most pregnant women, you'll trust your doctor to know what's acceptable and what's not. It's fine if you don't want to drink even if your OB says it's okay. That's your choice.
Just think, the next time you see a pregnant women belly up to a bar and order an O'Doule's, perhaps her very knowledgable doctor told her it was alright. And perhaps she's been kept up night after night craving that beer like you've been craving watermelon. Give her a break and the benefit of the doubt.
For all you know, that "pregnant" woman at the bar, drinking the Guiness, already had her baby, still looks pregnant, and her doctor or consultant recommended the beer to help her breast milk supply.
I'm just sharing my opinion, my experience, and my advice. And that advice was to ask your doctor first. So, to answer your question, no, I'm not telling pregnant ladies to give in to their cravings for beer-- UNLESS their doctor said it was okay.
